WASHINGTON, DC -- July 19, 1999 -- CAIS Internet (Nasdaq: CAIS) and Cisco Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CSCO-news), the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, announced today a significant multi-year agreement to expand CAIS network services and deliver joint high-speed networking solutions in high-growth markets for apartment communities and home networking.
The multi-million dollar agreement enables CAIS Internet's backbone expansion plans to 32 cities nationwide using Cisco's 12000 Gigabit Switch Routers (GSRs) and Cisco Catalyst Multilayer Switches to power CAIS's OverVoice services in multi-dwelling units (MDUs). The agreement also paves the way for CAIS to use Cisco products to deploy its high-speed low-cost OverVoice home networking solution, currently in test markets.
Unlike other MDU high speed access technologies, CAIS Internet is a single source for high speed Internet access services and a multi-point distribution solution. CAIS delivers the high speed bandwidth off its nationwide backbone, and with OverVoice. by CAIS Internet patented technology, distributes the high speed Internet access up to 10 Mbps to multiple residences. CAIS also has plans to rollout its 10 and 100 Mbps home networking solutions with its single point of contact solution.
"The Cisco Systems and CAIS Internet partnership facilitates CAIS's rapid deployment of bandwidth, multi-point and home networking high speed Internet solutions," said Ulysses G. Auger II, CEO, CAIS Internet. "With just one phone call to CAIS, we give users the total high speed Internet solution."
"Cisco is working with CAIS Internet to expand their backbone and deploy innovative Internet services like OverVoice, " said Larry Lang, vice president of service provider marketing, Cisco Systems. "Customers can be assured that they are receiving industry-leading New World services with CAIS technology, as well as Cisco's products and technology."
OverVoice delivers multi-point high speed Internet connections in apartment communities at speeds up to 30 times faster than 56K dial-up modems. OverVoice technology is simply installed on top of the property's existing telephone system, and separates voice and data signals with patented technology to create an Ethernet local area network like that found in many businesses. OverVoice provides a secure, uninterrupted, dedicated high speed Internet connection that can be shared simultaneously among many subscribers - and provides high speed Internet and telephone service on the same line at the same time where a second line is unavailable.
