SAN JOSE, Calif. -- June 30, 1999 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced the University of Connecticut (UConn) Health Center will use Cisco's web-enabled health care solutions to create a unified network that will enable researchers, physicians, and medical students to reap the tremendous advantages of Internet technology. Initial deployment of Cisco's Internet-based solutions will be at a new state-of-the art research facility where some of the industry's leading biomedical research and study is being performed. In the future, the end-to-end Cisco network will be deployed across the entire UConn Health Center campus. The Health Center is composed of the School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, John Dempsey Hospital, and an array of medical and graduate programs.
"The Cisco network will have a significant impact on the future success of our new research programs," said Leslie S. Cutler, chancellor and provost of health affairs at UConn. "Scientists will be able to use the latest technology in life-saving research and collaborate securely with colleagues around the world using the web."
In addition, Cisco's end-to-end, health care network infrastructure will provide far-reaching advantages for hospital professionals and patients alike. Physicians will now gain real-time access to patient data whether they are on the UConn campus or working from a remote location. This capability will accelerate quality patient services and medical attention where time is of the essence. Moreover, patients will realize cost-effective advantages through more timely dispensing of medical attention while decreasing the overall length of in-resident hospital stays.
"The UConn Health Center recognizes the inherent benefits of using web-enabled health care solutions to compete strategically in today's health care market," said Kathryn McTighe, health care manager of Cisco's Internet Business Solutions Group. "The solutions, in conjunction with Cisco's high-capacity, scalable network foundation, will help UConn realize its business objectives and enable it to quickly address emerging high-performance web applications."
