SINGAPORE -- June 22, 1999 -- Singapore Telecom (SingTel), Asia's premier telecommunications service provider, and Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, have formed a strategic alliance to bring to market cutting-edge New World Telecommunications solutions to customers in Singapore and the region.

Initial projects that the alliance partners will develop include intelligent buildings that are Internet Protocol (IP) aware, IP/VPN (IP/Virtual Private Network) services, a local Frame Relay network, DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) technology, and next-generation multi-service networks that integrate data, voice and video. Customers of both SingTel and Cisco Systems will be able to enjoy the cost benefits and advanced services that multi-service networks provide as well as unparalleled end-to-end network efficiency and reliability.

The agreement will allow SingTel to leverage the relationship with Cisco Systems to accelerate new service development, reducing time to market and costs, and influence product development to meet special requirements. In addition, SingTel will work towards certifying its services under the Cisco Powered Network program and designate Cisco Systems as its preferred vendor for internetworking products and technologies, including the migration to a New World infrastructure based on Internet Protocol.

Cisco Systems will become one of SingTel's end-to-end networking solutions providers as well as designate SingTel as its preferred supplier of telecommunications services in Singapore.

"SingTel is one of the leading telecommunications service providers in Asia and is committed to supporting Singapore's position as a telecommunications hub and a total business centre. As Singapore evolves into a knowledge-based economy and a major IT hub, SingTel must stay ahead and be able to deliver advanced telecommunications and networking solutions. Our alliance with Cisco Systems will further strengthen our ability to meet these challenges easily and efficiently," said Mr Lim Chuan Poh, executive vice president of Corporate Business, SingTel.

The strategic alliance will also involve a technology exchange program where both SingTel and Cisco Systems will brief each other on product and technology directions as well as work closely together on key customer accounts. SingTel engineers will also be able to gain working experience in Cisco Systems' Technical Assistance Centers (TACs).

"This alliance reflects the strong desire of both SingTel and Cisco Systems to bring to the Singapore and Asian markets advanced New World services based on Internet Protocol. SingTel is an important player today in the telecommunications world and has one of the most comprehensive ranges of competitively-priced telecommunications services available. This commitment to working closely with Cisco is a major step for Singapore and the region," said Mr Richard Freemantle, vice president, Asia-Pacific, Cisco Systems.
