SAN JOSE, Calif. -- June 14, 1999 -- Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, and Comcast Commercial Online Communications, Inc. (CCOC), today announced that they are teaming to deliver cable-based, high-speed Internet access and Virtual Private Network (VPN) services to small businesses, schools and telecommuters. Cisco and Comcast also announced that they are commencing internal trials of Internet Protocol (IP) telephony for possible future service deployment.

The Cisco and Comcast cooperative marketing arrangement, which allows Comcast to utilize Cisco's sales channel presence, combines the Cisco uBR924 cable access router with Comcast's commercial Internet services. The Cisco uBR924/CCOC combination will allow Comcast and its affiliates to quickly and easily deploy commercial grade high-speed Internet services, VPNs, secure firewalls and ultimately, New World services such as cable-based Voice-over-IP (VoIP) to enterprise branch offices, small businesses, schools and telecommuters.

Unlike cable modems that are intended for the consumer market, the uBR924 cable access router delivers the functionality required by business users by integrating a two voice port, Data-over-Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 1.1-based cable modem, a router and VPN capability into one device. The broader information technology community at the Comdex tradeshow in Chicago recently recognized the value of this integrated device by naming the uBR924 cable access router "Best Networking Hardware" and "Best of Show."

"Enterprise, small business and educational institutions are asking for cost-effective broadband solutions now, and Comcast recognizes this tremendous opportunity," said Paul Bosco, general manager for Cisco's Cable Products and Solutions Group. "As a partner to our MSO customers, our goal is not only to deliver New World products, but also programs which help make cable operators world-class telecommunications providers for businesses."

Cisco's uBR924 cable access router and Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) product, the uBR7246 Universal Broadband Router, provides Comcast customers with compelling end-to-end services. Both platforms are based on industry-leading Cisco IOS(R) software which gives cable operators the ability to deliver the latest and most advanced IP services over their hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) infrastructure.

"The Cisco solution is compelling because it's about more than products - it's about a partnership," said Matt Fanning, vice president of sales and marketing at Comcast Commercial Online. "By teaming with Cisco's sales channel to integrate their product line capability into our commercial service offerings, we'll be able to reach more potential customers with more revenue generating services than ever before."
