Cisco QoS Policy Manager and HP WebQoS Offer Integrated Solution

PALO ALTO and SAN JOSE, Calif. -- May 4, 1999 -- Hewlett-Packard Company and Cisco Systems, Inc. today introduced delivery of the computing industry's first network and server policy-based quality of service (QoS) solution. The end-to-end QoS solution protects mission-critical application performance throughout an enterprise network by prioritizing transactions and traffic.

Cisco and HP's solution integrates HP Web QoS server-resource optimization and CiscoAssure Policy Networking solutions. This advanced integration allows businesses to seamlessly exchange QoS information between the server and the network to protect performance of applications for enterprise resource planning, intranet and e-commerce.

"By employing CiscoAssure and HP WebQoS technology, enterprise customers will be able to align network and server resources with business needs," said Jayshree Ullal, vice president and general manager of the Enterprise Line of Business for Cisco Systems. "With application-aware linkages between the intelligent Cisco network and HP servers, customers can balance between high-performance and metered-usage of multiple business applications. This assures a level of service that mission-critical applications require an imperative when competing in the Internet economy."

"This solution empowers enterprises, ISVs and end-user customers with consistent and reliable performance from both the server and network," said Nigel Ball, general manager of HP's E-Services Division for Hewlett-Packard. "With the industry's first cross-vendor QoS solution, HP and Cisco are raising the bar for delivery of consistent services to business-critical applications with true end-to-end QoS."

CiscoAssure and Cisco QoS Policy Manager

Cisco delivers an unrivaled breadth of QoS policy mechanisms across a Cisco IOS.-intelligent infrastructure creating application-aware networking solutions for enterprise applications. The introduction of Cisco QoS Policy Manager provides centralized QoS policy control and automated policy deployment for enterprise networks. Phase Two of the CiscoAssure initiative is fulfilled by a broad scope of products delivering on key aspects of the CiscoAssure strategy. Additionally, Cisco router platforms and Cisco Catalyst. 5000/5500, 6000/6500 and 8500 family switches, with voice features, now have QoS and security.

HP Web QoS

HP WebQoS technology stabilizes, optimizes and prioritizes users and services on HP 9000 Enterprise Servers, enhancing the operating environment to support key business priorities. HP's WebQoS is the only server QoS product on the market for e-services. Among the features promoted by this technology are the ability to stabilize service delivery, allowing consistent quality to customers; optimize the use of resources and allow cost-effective solutions; and prioritize service, directing resources to the most important users and customers, creating new profit opportunities.

"The unique advantage of HP and Cisco's collaboration is that customers can now set policies that automatically deliver aligned server and network resource allocation therefore providing true end-to-end QoS capabilities," said Doug White, Partner in KPMG's Infrastructure Practice. "This solution transparently shares policy and application information effectively delivering end-to-end QoS."

"It is imperative to Ariba's Global 2000 clients that they have the ability to prioritize our mission-critical eCommerce transactions over other less-critical web-based traffic," said Dave Rome, vice president of marketing for Ariba. "The innovative intertwining of HP and Cisco technologies for the first time allows our clients true end-to-end QoS from the server to the network devices."
