SAN JOSE, Calif. -- May 18, 1999 -- Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, and Atlanta-based Cox Communications, Inc., one of the nation's leading broadband communications companies, today announced that Cox Communications has selected Cisco to supply Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS)/International Telecommunication Union (ITU) J.112-compliant equipment to provide enhanced, scalable Internet access service.
With Cisco products and technologies, Cox Communications customers will be served by an industry-leading, fiber-rich broadband packet infrastructure. The multiservice network infrastructure, capable of supporting data, voice and video, uses Cisco Universal Broadband Routers (uBRs), including the Cisco uBR7246 and uBR7223, as well as the uBR904 cable access router.

The J.112/DOCSIS standard provides one global standard for computing and consumer electronics manufacturers to develop broadband appliances, such as modems, personal computer adapters, networked game players, voice gateways and Web-enabled set-top boxes for the cable industry.
"By installing Cisco's DOCSIS-compliant equipment onto our network, Cox is enabling our data customers to select and purchase cable modems for their Cox@Home service directly from retail stores and consumer electronics companies," added Hildebrand.

The modular architecture of the Cisco uBR7246 maximizes Cox's investment by enabling the network to support multiple network services onto one platform and avoid headend product obsolescence as subscriber modem products and technologies evolve.
Cox Communications currently offers DOCSIS-qualified, high-speed cable modem Internet access service in Hartford, Conn., Providence, R.I and New Orleans, La. The company also offers Cox@Home and Cox@Work Internet services in Hampton Roads, Va.; Oklahoma City, Okla.; Omaha, Neb.; Phoenix, Ariz.; San Diego, Palos Verdes and Orange County, Calif. As of March 31, 1999, Cox had 88,890 Cox@Home Internet service customers.
