SAN JOSE, Calif. -- May 3, 1999 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced the Cisco 7100 Series of integrated virtual private network (VPN) routers-secure, scalable VPN platforms that provide enterprise customers with a comprehensive solution for cost-effective remote access, intranet and extranet connectivity using public data services.
Unveiled today within phase III of Cisco's Enterprise VPN strategy and solution set, the Cisco 7100 Series integrates high-speed routing with six key VPN components-tunneling, data encryption, security, firewall, advanced bandwidth management and service level validation. As a result, the new family of VPN routers dramatically reduces network cost and complexity associated with deploying numerous single-purpose devices, while providing a combination of VPN services and embedded wide area network (WAN) and Fast Ethernet interfaces for a turnkey VPN routing solution.
"Our customers realize the competitive advantages of cost-effective, secure connectivity over the public network. However, this emerging requirement doesn't replace their need for the reliable infrastructure Cisco has long provided-world-class, scalable routing services with field-proven high performance," noted Tom Russell, product marketing manager for Cisco's enterprise line of business.
"The Cisco 7100 Series continues in the tradition of Cisco's well-established Cisco 7000 family of routers with its integration of high-performance routing and best-of-breed Cisco IOS. software with advanced VPN tunneling, hardware-based encryption, stateful firewall and application-aware bandwidth management services. With service level validation, scalability and manageability added to its rich set of advanced VPN services, the Cisco 7100 Series is the high-end VPN router of choice for the corporate headquarters," said Russell.
John Freeman, principal analyst at industry analysis firm Current Analysis Inc., noted, "Cisco is the first vendor to address the problem of verifying service levels on a per VPN basis. As enterprise customers begin to use VPNs for more than just remote access, service level monitoring will be a critical component for ensuring that their applications perform as well over a VPN as they did over a leased line or even Frame Relay. The combination of functionality provided by the Cisco 7100 Series will be an irresistible value proposition for many enterprise customers."
A Scalable VPN Platform
The Cisco 7100 Series features tunneling and encryption services to enable site-to-site intranet, extranet or remote access applications. As scalability requirements increase, an optional Integrated Services Module (ISM) can be installed to support up to 2,000 simultaneous VPN tunnel sessions with Triple Data Encryption Standard (3DES) encrypted throughput at full-duplex DS3 speeds. In addition, Cisco's unique Tunnel Endpoint Discovery (TED) capability facilitates tunnel scalability by enabling tunneled connections to self-configure according to network security policy, eliminating the time-consuming process of defining every point-to-point tunnel on the VPN.A Comprehensive, Integrated VPN Solution
Extending beyond scalable encrypted tunnels-the basic foundation of a VPN-the Cisco 7100 Series also integrates advanced perimeter security and intrusion detection via the ICSA-certified Cisco IOS Firewall Feature Set. The product family also provides application-aware bandwidth management for reliable throughput of high-priority traffic, such as e-commerce database transactions up to the application layer. In addition, end-to-end VPN performance over the service provider network can be validated against service level agreements using a suite of service monitoring features available within Cisco IOS.Powered for Advanced VPNs
The Cisco 7100 Series provides high performance processing power for high-speed routing and advanced VPN services. Its unique, voice-ready modular processing architecture dedicates separate parallel processing power to VPN services such as encryption and tunneling by utilizing task-specific service modules, thus enabling the central processor to deliver superior routing services performance. By coupling this advanced processing architecture with comprehensive VPN functionality, the Cisco 7100 Series provides industry-leading extensibility and investment protection.Pricing and Availability
The Cisco 7100 Series encompasses two VPN routers-the Cisco 7120 for T1 to T3 connections and the Cisco 7140 for T3 and above. Starting at approximately $12,000, these VPN routers will be available in July. The Cisco 7100 Series, as well as a full VPN demonstration exhibit, will be featured during the Spring Networld + Interop exhibition in Las Vegas, May 11-13, 1999. Customers, press and analysts are invited to visit the Cisco booth, #7053, at any time during the show.
