LAS VEGAS, NEV. -- May 12, 1999 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that it has joined with other leading technology companies to form an international advocacy group dedicated to fostering greater understanding of and guidelines for the fast-emerging application service provider segment of the computer industry. Based in Massachusetts, the Application Service Provider Industry Consortium (ASP Industry Consortium) will sponsor research, foster standards and work to articulate the measurable benefits of the evolving ASP delivery model.

As an extension of the Cisco Hosted Application initiative, Cisco will contribute industry-leading architectures, combined with Cisco IOS. software, to enable service providers to maximize the Internet or their IP infrastructure for powerful hosted application solutions. Hosted applications open a New World business opportunity for service providers to broaden their service portfolio to differentiate their business, increase profitability, and build customer loyalty.

Wide-scale application hosting across the Internet demands an intelligent, end-to-end network infrastructure to satisfy customer expectations for integration, reliability, security, and performance. Hosted application services that are Cisco Powered Network certified are based on the same industry-leading platforms and Cisco IOS software that businesses of all sizes have come to trust.

"The ASP Industry Consortium expands upon the Cisco Hosted Application Initiative and recognizes the New World of communications that aligns with Cisco's strategic direction of products, solutions and broadband technologies," said Eugene Lee, vice president of marketing for Cisco's Small/Medium line of business. "Hosted applications enable service providers to partner with their business customers and move up the value chain while enabling businesses to enjoy applications that were previously unavailable to them."

In addition to Cisco, the founding members of the ASP Industry Consortium include AT&T, AristaSoft Corporation, Boundless Technologies, Inc., Citrix Systems, Inc., Compaq Computer Corporation, Cylex Systems, Inc., Ernst & Young LLP, Exodus Communications, Inc., FutureLink Corporation, GTE, Great Plains Software, IBM Corporation, JAWS Technologies, Inc., Marimba, Inc., Onyx Software Corporation, SaskTel, Sharp Electronics Corporation, Sun Microsystems, Inc., Telecomputing, UUNET, Verio, Inc., and Wyse Technology. As a founding member, Eugene Lee holds a seat on the ASP Industry Consortium Board of Directors.
