Cisco's Catalyst Family Supports Gigabit Over Copper Technology
-
What:Cisco will be demonstrating its ability to transmit gigabit Ethernet traffic over standard Category 5 unshielded twisted pair cabling. The demonstration will be running in Cisco's booth at Networld-InterOp (#7053). The technology demonstration involves two back-to-back Catalyst 4003 switches, running a two-port Gigabit EtherChannel with a fiber-based Gigabit Ethernet link, demonstrating the media independence of Gigabit EtherChannel.
When:From 10:00 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 11 through

Who:Press, Analysts show attendees interested in next generation gigabit technology
Benefits in Enterprise Environments:
Gigabit-over-copper technology has been under development for the past few years and is rapidly reaching a point of stability for enterprise customers. The 1000 Base-T specification enables users to deploy gigabit Ethernet systems over the large installed base of Category 5 UTP wiring. This cost-effective solution gives network managers another option to connect high performance desktops and link them into an end-to-end gigabit system.About the Catalyst Family of Switches
The Catalyst family of switches is comprised of a range of solutions that span from the wiring closet, through the distribution layer and into the core. As the leading supplier of gigabit Ethernet solutions, Cisco's portfolio includes the Catalyst 2948, 4003, 4912, 5000, 5000, 6000, 6500 and the 8500 series.Cisco Systems
