Prestigious Award Recognizes Cisco's Catalyst 8540 Switch Router for Versatility and Performance



LAS VEGAS, NEV. -- May 12, 1999 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that it has been selected to receive one of the network industry's top honors: Network Magazine's Product of the Year Award. The award will be presented to Cisco during a ceremony being held at the Bellagio Hotel tonight at 7:00 pm in conjunction with the NetWorld + InterOp 99 show.

There were thousands of products that were considered for these awards, yet only a select few demonstrated compelling new features, outstanding price/performance, and a unique approach to solving long-term problems for customers. The Catalyst. 8540 was chosen as the top "Enterprise Switch" category.

According to Network Magazine, the Catalyst 8540 is a "true standout" and was selected above the rest of the competition because of it unique combination of technology and functionality. Features like support for essential protocols like IP, IPX, IP multicast, OSPF, PIM, RIP, IGMP and high availability options through Cisco's IOS. software were also cited as further examples of why the Catalyst 8540 is a superior enterprise switch.

The Cisco Catalyst 8540 Switch Router is a high-performance 13-slot, modular solution that supports high-density Layer 3 and 4 switching with advanced quality-of-service (QoS) capabilities, and voice and video support mechanisms. With a backplane capacity of 40 Gbps, the Catalyst 8540 supports 24 million packets per second of IP, IPX and IP multicast traffic.

Additionally, the Catalyst 8540 can support up to 128 10/100 Ethernet ports or 16 gigabit Ethernet ports. With the ability to support up to 128 OC-3, 32 OC-12 or eight OC-48 ATM ports, the Catalyst 8540 is a versatile, high performance solution that meets the needs of large enterprise backbone.
