Alliance supports InterMail's millions of licenses to bring email, voicemail and faxmail into a common, standards-based infrastructure
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- April 5, 1999 -- Software.com, Inc., a leading provider of carrier-scale messaging solutions for service providers, today announced support for Cisco Unified Communications. This initiative will enable service providers to build a standards-based infrastructure from which to offer a full range of IP-based messaging services - email, IP voicemail, and IP faxmail - which subscribers will be able to access from any type of device, from a cellular phone to a Web browser.
"The rapid movement of messaging applications onto an IP infrastructure is driving service providers' needs for massively scalable architectures," said Valdur Koha, president of Software.com. "Cisco Unified Communications supports InterMail's installed base of millions of subscribers so that service providers can rapidly expand the range of services they offer to subscribers. And, by transforming their infrastructures to a standards-based configuration, service providers can bypass traditional, proprietary systems."
Software.com's InterMail family of messaging servers is specifically designed for next-generation service providers (telcos, ISPs, cables, portals) that want to offer a complete spectrum of messaging services to consumer and business subscribers. Proven to support millions of subscribers, it features a multimedia message store that can accommodate email, voicemail, faxmail and other message types, as well as a high-performance, LDAP-compliant directory, and standards-based integration with a range of access devices. As a result, service providers leveraging InterMail and Cisco Unified Communications should be able to reduce their infrastructure and ongoing maintenance costs while offering subscribers the ability to access email, voice and fax messages from different device types including cellular or wireline phone, email client or Web browser.
"Cisco and Software.com share a common vision about service providers' opportunities to create new revenue streams by integrating email, voicemail and fax in an open, standards-based infrastructure," said Roland Acra, general manager, Remote Access Business Unit at Cisco. "With its massive scalability and support for industry standards, Software.com's InterMail forms the foundation for the new unified communications services."
Cisco Unified Communications enables service providers to offer their customers consolidated voice, fax, and email services that are retrievable by phone, PC or handheld device regardless of location. Unlike traditional communications solutions, the Cisco strategy allows service providers to develop and market profitable, cost-effective services that build brand identity and increase customer loyalty while reducing churn. Cisco is the first manufacturer to provide such a platform centered on a standards-based, open-protocol infrastructure.
