SYDNEY, Australia -- April 21, 1999 -- Telstra is enhancing its national Internet Protocol network to meet the growing demand for IP-based applications in Australia and offshore by installing Cisco 12000 series Gigabit Switch Routers (GSR) in its network.

Telstra's IP network supports the carrier's suite of Big Pond. Internet access services. Following massive growth in its Internet traffic, which more than doubled in 1998, Telstra is building a powerful IP based high-speed network for the 21st century.

Currently, the Telstra Big Pond network transports more than two terabytes of Internet traffic every day. To meet this demand, the Cisco 12000 GSR series routers will be used to support IP over synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) at 155 Mbps.

To ensure the network continues to develop ahead of customer demand, it offers a migration path to gigabit-speed carriage systems. Telstra's evaluation showed the Cisco 12000 GSR met its needs for true carrier class redundancy while supporting speeds of OC-48c/STM-16 with evolution capability to OC-192c/STM-64c.

The Cisco 12000 series complements the Cisco 7500 series routers already in use within the Telstra Big Pond network. Both Cisco models run scalable and service-rich Cisco IOS. software, which provides high-performance queuing and traffic engineering services that support advanced offerings like Telstra's IP class of service (CoS).

Telstra Internet & Data Products Chief Technologist, Geoff Huston said the new Cisco 12000 GSR solution enabled Telstra to meet the exponentially increasing demand for high-bandwidth and quality of service. "By deploying Cisco 12000 GSRs throughout our core backbone, we are well positioned to offer emerging New World, high-end services to our customers ahead of competition," Mr. Huston said.

Cisco's vice president of Service Provider Marketing, Larry Lang said, "High performance networking is key to the success of telecommunications companies today. Telstra's decision to embrace the New World of IP-based networks means the company can lead in meeting demand for IP based applications, as well as building on its ability to deliver advanced, differentiated services in the future."
