Cisco Service Connection Manager for the Cisco 6400 Universal Access Concentrator Gives Service Providers a Powerful, Cost-Effective Provisioning and Management Solution

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- March 24, 1999 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today introduced the Cisco Service Connection Manager (SCM) for the Cisco 6400 Universal Access Concentrator, a scalable product suite which enables service providers to easily, cost-effectively and rapidly deploy, provision and manage complex high-speed Internet access networks, without relying on expensive, highly-skilled personnel. The company also announced that the Cisco 6400 concentrator has passed all requirements for Level Three Network Equipment Building Systems (NEBS) compliance from Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bellcore). The two developments further establish the Cisco 6400 system as a carrier-class solution for delivering high-speed Internet services.

The new Cisco SCM delivers sophisticated, integrated management capabilities through a simplified, service-oriented graphical user interface (GUI) for the Cisco 6400 Universal Access Concentrator. The customizable, user-friendly GUI of the Cisco SCM allows network operators, including personnel with little or no SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) or Cisco IOS. technical knowledge, to remotely provision Cisco 6400 Universal Access Concentrators and manage all of the systems' functionality. These capabilities reduce deployment and operations costs and minimize set-up time.

The Cisco 6400 universal access concentrator is a scalable service gateway that enables service providers to deliver a new generation of on-demand, high-speed and high-quality networking services. It can be deployed in service provider central offices, Points-of-Presence (POPs) or corporate data centers. The system enables the dynamic selection and delivery of dedicated broadband network services, such as high-speed Internet access, multipoint videoconferencing, streaming video, entertainment-driven traffic, and secure access to corporate networks (for both voice and data services).

"The Cisco 6400 Universal Access Concentrator belongs to a new generation of products addressing the need for service aggregation in broadband access deployments," said David Gudmundson, vice president and general manager of Cisco's DSL and Systems Software Business Unit. "By introducing the Cisco Service Connection Manager, we have made network installation and operation significantly easier and more cost-effective, thus enabling service providers to save on training, deployment and operational costs. The Cisco SCM furthers Cisco's commitment to deliver carrier-class management solutions for our New World products."

Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bellcore) Compliance

The Cisco 6400 Universal Access Concentrator conformed with all of the applicable criteria in Telcordia Technologies' Level Three Network Equipment Building Systems (NEBS) analysis, the company's most stringent set of tests designed to assess environmental compatibility of networking equipment.

Level Three NEBS analysis, which includes GR-63 and GR-1089 testing criteria, verifies that the product conforms with relevant industry standards and requirements related to specific environmental influences. Telcordia Technologies' NEBS program is designed to ensure efficient deployment, reliability and safe operation of products used in telecommunications networks.

By achieving NEBS compliance status for the Cisco 6400 concentrator, Cisco has empowered CLECs and ISPs to take advantage of physical co-location rights in telco central offices. Now, ISPs and CLECs can deploy the powerful, scalable Cisco 6400 concentrator alongside the ILEC's DSLAMs, thus drastically reducing the capital and operating costs required to back-haul high-bandwidth data across the service provider's network.

Pricing and Availability

The Cisco SCM for the Cisco 6400 Universal Access Concentrator is currently available and orderable in entry, medium and large service configurations with list prices starting at $10,000.
