SAN JOSE, Calif. -- January 18, 1999 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today introduced new management and security products improving virtual private network (VPN) solutions for enterprise customers. Roadmaps citing the evolution of key products were rolled out as part of Cisco's five point, multiphase VPN strategy, also announced today.
Enabling global markets across the Internet, in conjunction with classic wide area networks (WANs), has created an immediate requirement for integrated management, automatic mapping of business policies across the network and centralized security management. Cisco's five point, multiphase plan for delivering enterprise VPNs offers comprehensive management, as well as control and auditing of secured services across network platforms and appliances. This approach simplifies the deployment of VPNs by increasing their reliability and manageability.
Cisco Security Manager 1.0 (Security Manager)
This new security policy management software is a critical element of Cisco's suite of "VPN-enabled" management tools. Security Manager extends Cisco's end-to-end security solution and introduces a key policy management component of the CiscoAssure Policy Networking initiative. This introductory release will enable an administrator to define, enforce and audit security policies for multiple distributed Cisco PIX Firewalls. The Security Manager allows an administrator to define security policies by specifying business objectives that are easily mapped across the network. This significant reduction of security administration contributes to a lower cost-of-ownership. Security Manager ensures policy enforcement and auditing capabilities by validating consistency of policy prioritization and providing real-time alarms when policies are violated.
CiscoWorks2000 Wide Area Services Extensions
Internetwork Performance Monitor (IPM) 2.0 is a Java-based response time and availability troubleshooting application. It monitors hop-by-hop response times for routers in a WAN. IPM utilizes Response Time Reporter (RTR), an agent embedded in Cisco IOS. software, to evaluate response time thresholds and generate alarms. Built on Web standards, IPM shares device inventory knowledge with other CiscoWorks2000 products. IPM's real-time software, previously known as CiscoWorks Blue IPM, has been renamed to reflect IPM's latest enhancements designed for VPNs.Access List Manager is a Web-based application that enables network managers to design and implement Cisco IOS software filtering services, as configured through access list statements. ACL Manager increases consistency in ACL mapping, reduces complexity of managing ACLs and reduces the time to deploy wholesale changes across the enterprise VPN solution.
NetSonar Security Scanner 2.0 for Windows NT (NetSonar)
Cisco also announced today the availability of a new version of the network vulnerability assessment tool, the Cisco NetSonar security scanner. Now supporting Windows NT, the NetSonar systems incorporates premier security expertise allowing users to proactively measure security, manage risk and eliminate security vulnerabilities. This tool is designed to provide the ability to quickly gather information about the security posture of a an entire enterprise network, validate security policies and take the necessary steps to eliminate potential vulnerabilities. Deployed as part of Cisco's VPN strategy, the NetSonar solution helps sustain the security integration of the network infrastructure.Based on patent-pending technology, the NetSonar 2.0 for Windows NT scanner strengthens Cisco's leadership position in the network security marketplace. This new version offers broad licensing flexibility, allowing customers to use the product without specifying in advance the target IP address space. Cisco customers with maintenance contracts have access to frequent Web-based updates of NetSonar vulnerability rules and network security database (NSDB) updates supported by Cisco's Countermeasures Research Team. The NetSonar scanner identifies both network infrastructure and desktop vulnerabilities with an increased focus on the Windows NT environment.
Other security services and solutions from Cisco include L2TP, IPSec for IOS, the Cisco NetRanger intrusion detection system, Cisco IOS Firewall Feature Set and the PIX Firewall. L2TP is a standards-based networking protocol that, when used in combination with IP Security (IPSec), allows enterprises and service providers to establish an encrypted virtual private network for remote access. Cisco's IP Security (IPSec) for IOS now supports the Triple Data Encryption Standard (DES) algorithm, providing the strong encryption demanded by organizations with very strict confidentiality requirements. Triple DES uses a 168-bit key, making it exponentially more difficult to crack than the 56-bit DES. Triple DES for IPSec ships in IOS 12.0(2)T software on the Cisco 2600, 3600, 4000, AS5300, 7200, and 7500 series platforms.
The Cisco IOS Firewall, a security-specific, value-add option to Cisco IOS software, provides integrated firewall functionality for every perimeter of the network. Available for a wide range of Cisco IOS-based routers, the Cisco IOS Firewall offers sophisticated security and policy enforcement for intranet and extranet connections, as well as for securing Internet connectivity for remote and branch offices. This solution is now available on the 7200 Series router platform.
The Cisco PIX Firewall is a dedicated firewall that delivers strong security without impacting network performance. The PIX Firewall is the leading product in its segment of the firewall market and provides full firewall protection that completely conceals the architecture of an internal network from the outside world.
