SAN JOSE, Calif. -- January 6, 1999 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that Banco CCF Brasil has successfully integrated its diverse network onto a single Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) backbone, using Cisco's solutions.

The bank's ATM network backbone is based on Cisco's IGX 8400 series of wide-area switches, a carrier-class network backbone that supports delivery of broadband and narrowband services. Using the Cisco IGX series, Banco CCF Brasil can consolidate multiple types of traffic over a reliable multiservice backbone to reduce costs and improve application performance.

Brazil's telephone costs are among the world's highest. Intracity lines in Sao Paulo can cost up to $6,000 per month, and a single data-only telephone line between Latin American cities can range up to $50,000 per month. The bank recouped its investment in the Cisco IGX series network in nine months, and reduced its telecommunications costs by 60 percent. The new network also facilitated the opening of numerous bank branches and the launch of new banking services, helping Banco CCF Brasil to sustain their triple-digit growth.

The bank is also using Cisco Catalyst. 5500 series LAN switches, providing integration for multiple protocols, and Cisco routing equipment for connecting its sites domestically and abroad.

"The choice of Cisco's ATM technology enabled us to make a technological leap, and lay the foundation for future solutions," said Luiz Carlos Asmir, Banco CCF Brasil's telecommunications infrastructure officer. "We now have faster, more efficient communication with our branches, and with such substantial savings, will be able to continue investing in solutions to improve our competitive advantage."

"Cisco's ATM solution is enabling Banco CCF Brasil to reduce its network maintenance and support costs," said Brad Wurtz, vice president and general manager of Cisco's Multiservice Switching Business Unit. "By integrating data, voice and video onto a single platform, the new network will allow Banco CCF Brasil to more efficiently deploy new, cutting-edge services."
