DALLAS, Texas -- December 2, 1998 -- Samsung Telecommunications America (STA), Inc., today announced that it has shipped more than 10,000 units of its DOCSIS-compliant cable modem - the InfoRanger - to the North American market. Samsung's latest single deployment is with COGECO, one of Canada's largest cable companies.

In addition to COGECO, Samsung has provided production units to more than 15 major multisystem operators (MSOs) throughout the United States and Canada. The MSOs represent all phases of deployment, ranging from field trials to full-scale launches. Samsung is leading the initial Data-over-Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) deployment and is establishing itself as a leader in cable modem industry.

"Clients using the Samsung InfoRanger cable modem experience the Internet as it should be experienced - fast, responsive, compelling, entertaining and educational. It makes the Internet what it should be," said Michael P. Foley, vice president, telecom at COGECO Cable Inc. "Our partnership with Samsung has enabled us to get ahead of the competitive curve, improve our service reliability and lower our operating expenses."

"Our strong relationship with COGECO, one of Canada's largest cable companies, and a pioneer in high-speed two-way communications over cable, shows that Samsung is truly leading a revolution in the way people think about accessing the Internet," said Mark Stubbe, vice president of STA's Networks division. "And, we're maintaining that lead by aggressively putting more cable modems in the hands of other MSOs deploying the new technology."

Released in July, InfoRanger embeds Cisco Systems Inc.'s Cisco NetWorks technologies, and enables high-speed Internet access and a wide variety of additional multimedia and networking applications over hybrid fiber coax (HFC) networks.

"This is an exceptional milestone for Samsung in developing and delivering DOCSIS-compliant cable modems to the market," said Paul Bosco, general manager of Cisco's Cable Products and Solutions Business Unit. "The cable industry has pursued standards-based products so that it can offer high-quality, affordable cable modems to the consumer. Samsung's rapid deployments of InfoRanger are very encouraging and will accelerate nationwide DOCSIS acceptance."
