Plans to Deploy Data/Voice Capabilities in More Than 100 Offices Worldwide; Selects New Cisco 2620 and 2621 for Combination of Voice Support, Fast Ethernet, Security Features and Investment Protection

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- November 23, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that Sybase, Inc. has selected the Cisco 2620 and 2621 modular access routers (announced today, see separate release) to deploy an integrated data/voice network across more than 100 offices worldwide. Sybase has standardized worldwide on Cisco as its networking supplier, and has selected the Cisco 2620 and 2621 for their combination of data/voice integration, 10/100 Fast Ethernet capability, firewall features, virtual LAN (VLAN) and virtual private network (VPN) support. Sybase cited the quality of the voice transmission, superior investment protection, and ease of deployment and management of the Cisco 2600 series as key to the selection.

To link corporate headquarters with sales offices and distribution centers worldwide, Sybase will use the Cisco 2620 and 2621 in its remote branch offices in conjunction with Cisco 7500 series routers, Catalyst 5000 switches and Cisco 3600 Series modular access routers that are already in place. Sybase plans to deploy the 10/100 Fast Ethernet and VLAN capabilities of the Cisco 2620 and 2621, as well as Cisco's advanced firewall capabilities, to easily link and manage its remote branch offices for voice over IP (VoIP) applications. In addition, the company plans to utilize a centralized attendant application using VoIP that allows one telephone receptionist to handle calls to and from multiple sales offices, providing virtual receptionist presence for all of them.

The Cisco 2600 series was designed as a cost-effective branch office platform with extensive multiservice capabilities and a broad selection of WAN connectivity options. "We selected the Cisco 2600 because we were impressed with the excellent quality, VoIP and VLAN capabilities offered by Cisco's products," said Sid Morgan, manager of data communications for Sybase. "By deploying data/voice integrated services, Sybase anticipates significant cost savings and increased business opportunities by making it easier to quickly establish local offices in emerging markets. The firewall capabilities now available for the Cisco 2600 series protect the Sybase network and allow secure access to the Internet or our VPN services."

Cisco's Expanded 2600 Series Router Family

With models that support Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Token Ring, and mixed LAN environments, the Cisco 2600 series is a key component of Cisco's multiservice integration offering, allowing customers to consolidate data, voice and video traffic to reduce costs, enable new business applications, and improve network efficiency. Because the Cisco 2600 series is modular, customers can easily add new services or capacity as their needs change over time, providing maximum investment protection and simplifying the deployment of new network services.

"We designed the Cisco 2600 series specifically to address the needs of companies, who, like Sybase, are facing a key technology transition," said Don Proctor, director of product marketing in the Cisco Multiservice Access Business Unit. "Our customers need networking solutions that are versatile enough to meet today's needs, while providing a smooth transition path to next-generation services. We're pleased that Sybase is able to take advantage of these features as they move toward data/voice integration, Fast Ethernet, and VPNs for their remote offices."
