Dassault A.T. Announces the New Cable Modem Product Line Based on Cisco NetWorks Technology

Monday, November 30, 1998 -- DASSAULT A.T. (a subsidiary of DASSAULT ELECTRONIQUE, THOMSON-CSF Group), and Cisco Systems, Inc. announced today an agreement to develop next-generation cable modems designed to deliver high-speed Internet access and telephony services operating on modern Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) cable systems.

Under the terms of the agreement, DASSAULT A.T. will license Cisco NetWorks Internet technologies to provide high-speed Internet Protocol (IP)-based communication functionality for DASSAULT A.T.'s new line of cable modems that are targeted at the consumer and home office markets. The first two products in this line will be WebC@ble Data, which delivers high-speed Internet access for personal computers, and WebC@ble Voice/Data which will support two telephone lines in addition to high-speed Internet access.

DASSAULT A.T.'s next-generation of cable modems will be Data-over-Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS)/International Telecommunications Union (ITU) J.112-compliant. Initially proposed by major cable operators in the US, the DOCSIS/ITU J.112 specification has been adopted worldwide for telephony-over-cable, HFC infrastructures, and enables interoperability with compliant networks.

"Based on this agreement with Cisco, DASSAULT A.T. will rapidly integrate value-added telephony and data services into its cable modem solutions to benefit residential Internet users and telecommuters. By integrating these key services, DASSAULT A.T. is taking a leadership role in the European market, " said Jean-Paul Vautrey, chairman and chief executive officer of DASSAULT A.T.

"This relationship with DASSAULT A.T. represents Cisco's commitment to the development and deployment of cable Internet solutions that support new multiservice offerings to consumers worldwide," said Charlie Giancarlo, senior vice president of Cisco's Global Alliances. "By combining DASSAULT A.T.'s modems with Cisco's Universal Broadband Routers, cable operators will be able to deliver reliable, high-speed Internet services and IP telephony solutions to their customers."
