Ten Additional Companies Join Collaboration to Spur Mass-Market Availability of ADSL Technology
Taipei, Taiwan -- November 19, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced the opening of a development and testing lab in Taiwan in collaboration with the Institute for Information Industry (III) to accelerate the adoption of DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) technology for high-speed access to the Internet.
DSL technology transmits data across existing copper telephone lines at speeds up to 8 million bits per second, or more than 125 times faster than the 56K modems commonly shipped with PCs today. Taiwanese computer-products manufacturers will use the lab to develop DSL technology and to test the compliance of their DSL products with international standards and Cisco solutions.
When plans for the DSL lab were announced in June, six Taiwan manufacturers expressed support for the DSL lab, including: Askey Computer Corp., DB Networks, GVC Corp., Sun Moon Star, Tecom and Zyxel Communication Corp. Joining them with today's lab opening are ten additional companies: C-Com Corp., CIS Technology, E-TECH Inc., FIC, Hitron Technology Inc., PETEK, Sysgration, Taicom Data Systems, Tainet, and UMEC. By incorporating DSL capability into their products, these companies will help accelerate the adoption of DSL by consumers worldwide. Upon completion of testing, companies will receive a mark of interoperability from Cisco for use in marketing materials.
"Cisco is pleased to be working with leading Taiwan manufacturers to drive interoperability of high-speed DSL product technology, said Gary Daichendt, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Operations for Cisco. "As a result of this initiative, companies and individuals will have a broad choice of affordable products that revolutionize the way they interact with the Internet through the delivery of New World services that allow data, voice and video to travel together in a single, IP-based network."
Daichendt attended an opening ceremony for the lab at the MOEA (Ministry of Economic Affairs). The event was also attended by Chii-ming Yiin, Vice Minister of the MOEA, and representatives from the ten participant companies.
"Taiwan is a leader in the Asia Pacific's information field," said Yiin. "To strengthen our leading position, the government has promoted high-tech projects in coordination with existing manufacturing bases. Our cooperation with Cisco is a positive step in furthering Taiwan's technological goals."
Yun Kuo, the President of III added, "Internet applications are changing the global telecommunications paradigm. It is imperative for Taiwan companies to further their R&D and manufacturing capabilities in the information area. By transferring DSL technology through the DSL Lab, Cisco is recognizing Taiwan manufacturers and advancing the country's ability to grow as a high-tech nation."
