Cisco NetRanger Provides Customers with a Comprehensive and Effective Intrusion Detection Capability
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- November 10, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, announced today the availability of the Cisco NetRanger intrusion detection system. A component of Cisco's end-to-end security offerings, the NetRanger system supports Cisco's leadership in providing customers with reliable, secure and cost-effective solutions required for mission-critical business.
"We provide managed services for more than 350 customers, so the NetRanger system's scalable architecture is critical for us," said Craig Tysdal, president and chief executive officer for NetSolve, a leading provider of remote enterprise network management and security services. "We also chose the Cisco NetRanger solution because it's the most effective and reliable intrusion detection product available."
"Cisco is committed to helping our customers assemble end-to-end network security," said Cliff Meltzer, senior vice president and general manager, IOS Technology and Engineering Operations. "The NetRanger system offers unmatched protection for a company's network from both external and, just as importantly, internal attacks."
Designed for businesses of all sizes, the Cisco NetRanger solution is a real-time intrusion detection system that is not only easy to install and manage but also provides low cost of ownership. In addition, the product is scalable and reliable - features required for the effective operation of security solutions on both Internet and intranet networks.
The Cisco NetRanger system features two components: the Director, a scalable remote management system, and the Sensor, a high-performance, plug-and-play appliance that requires no special expertise to install. Located at key points in the network, the Sensors monitor and perform real-time analysis of network traffic by looking for anomalies and misuse that is undetectable by other security technologies. Sensors can also monitor Cisco routers for network security policy violations, providing users with improved security. When the system detects an unauthorized activity, the Sensors can automatically terminate the specific connection, permanently block the attacking host, log the incident and send an alarm to the NetRanger Director. Other legitimate connections continue to operate independently without disruption of network service or performance. The high-performance NetRanger Sensors are optimized for specific data rates and can monitor network segments including Ethernet, Fast Ethernet (100BaseT), Token Ring and FDDI.
The Cisco NetRanger solution provides its comprehensive and effective intrusion detection through its unique 'three-tier' attack detection capability. This attack database is managed, tested and upgraded by a specialized Cisco team that includes some of the industry's most skilled security professionals.
