SAN JOSE, Calif. -- November 16, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that Banco do Brasil, the largest retail bank in Latin America, has successfully implemented an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) multiservice network based on Cisco's ATM solutions.

Cisco's ATM solution for Banco do Brasil enables delivery of worldwide electronic commerce, personal banking and private banking services to the bank's growing number of customers. The bank's ATM network backbone is based on Cisco's IGX 8400 series of wide-area switches, a carrier-class network backbone that supports delivery of broadband and narrowband services. Using the Cisco IGX series, large enterprises such as Banco do Brasil can consolidate multiple types of traffic over a reliable multiservice backbone to reduce costs and improve application performance. The bank is also using Cisco Catalyst 5500 series LAN switches, providing integration for multiple protocols, including ATM, QLLC, RFC 1490 and BSC-3. Cisco routers are installed in the bank's branches to route transactions and SNA traffic.

"The ability to integrate multiple protocols and deliver data, voice and video applications with outstanding performance is one of the strongest appeals of the Cisco end-to-end solution," said Heliomar Lima, technical consultant for Banco do Brasil. "Dynamic bandwidth allocation gives us much greater availability with lower costs."

"Cisco's ATM solutions are enabling Banco do Brasil to offer its customers a comprehensive suite of new services, including electronic home banking, Internet banking and call center services," said Joe Golden, vice president of marketing for Cisco's multiservice switching business unit. "Tight integration between Cisco's IGX 8400 series WAN switches and our router and access products enables delivery of multiservice capabilities across the network."
