Cable Solutions with Voice & Data Functionality for the Future

MADRID, Spain -- October 21, 1998 -- Cisco Systems and Spanish communications company Teldat have formed an alliance to create a new generation of cable modem products for small business and residential use. Teldat will be embedding key technology from Cisco - including Cisco Networks software - to ensure the product range offers users support for integrated voice and data services (such as voice over IP) as they develop in the future.

A major advantage of cable modem technology is permanent high speed connection for Internet access (it does not require a Edial-up on demand connection like traditional modems do), quality audio and video transmission, plus instantaneous e-mail. It also supports applications such as flat rate billing, telecommuting and remote teaching, VoIP telephony and implementation of virtual private networks - all features likely to become increasingly significant in the future.

The alliance's first product, AURA, will be available early in 1999. The product will be based upon standard Data over Cable Networking which conforms to the International Telecommunication Standard (ITU) J.112 or DOCSIS Data-over-Cable System Specification (DOCSIS-MCNS). By conforming to this new open standard, AURA will provide interoperability between various types of equipment. Its appeal to a global market will therefore be greatly enhanced.

AURA is an external cable modem with Ethernet interface, supporting the 802.Id transparent bridge standard between the Ethernet and the cable ports. It also provides IP and MAC filtering based on source and destination addresses. AURA implements DHCP and TFTP clients to obtain configuration files from the head end device.

Commenting on the alliance, Antonio Garcia Marcos, Teldat's President and CEO, says, "Teldat is proud to be one of the first companies worldwide to establish this kind of alliance with Cisco. The agreement is an acknowledgement of Teldat's commitment to technological development at the leading edge."

Charles Giancarlo, senior vice-president of Global Alliances at Cisco Systems comments, "By allying with Teldat in this way we are able to deploy some exciting technology in a very worthwhile range of products for small business and home users. This new generation of cable modems also promises a very interesting networking future for such users. The prospect of Voice over IP within an integrated data network fits perfectly with Cisco's "New World" vision of data-driven communications."
