Consumers Experience Rush of Broadband Internet Services

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., -- October 14, 1998 -- The first cable Internet service traveling roadshow has logged more than 5,000 miles since it kicked off in mid-August and has provided consumers with the chance to check out the Web at the lightening-fast speeds that cable can deliver. Dramatically raising awareness of high-speed cable Internet services, the "Cable Internet Revolution Expo" will have traveled to 12 high-traffic shopping malls and entertainment centers in the U.S. and Canada by the time it wraps in November. The Expo has already visited Irvine, San Diego, Phoenix, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Nashville, Baltimore and Long Island.

With this marketing effort to educate consumers and increase awareness of cable modem technology, @Home has raised the bar on innovative broadband marketing programs by bringing hands-on demonstrations to mainstream, high-traffic shopping centers. The Expo stops in each city for three days, during the busy Friday, Saturday and Sunday shopping period. The tour has received enthusiastic consumer response, with thousands of people coming to the Expo in each location. The stop in Nashville netted @Home affiliate InterMedia more than 500 new subscribers in a single weekend.

"The promotion of the Cable Internet Revolution Expo, both locally and nationally, created a lot of consumer excitement and awareness. The mall traffic started on Friday and didn't let up all weekend. We got the biggest bang for our marketing buck compared to any other event we've ever done," stated Bill Haggarty, Director of Subscriber Services, Intermedia Partners. "It was a phenomenal success in terms of signing new subscribers, and creating consumer awareness. All I want to know is, when can we get the tour to come back to Nashville again!"

Title sponsors Cisco Systems, Inc. and @Home Network teamed up earlier this year to put together one of the most innovative consumer marketing programs in the broadband industry today. The Expo combines Cisco Data-Over-Cable System Interface Specification (DOCSIS) licensees Com21, General Instrument, RCA, Samsung, and Sony with compelling business, entertainment, news, college, travel and educational web content providers Bloomberg, CBS Sportsline, CNN Interactive, Heat.Net, T@p Online, Travelocity, Ziff Davis TV. This mix of broadband-related products and services has attracted consumers who marvel at web performance with peak speeds more than a hundred times faster than conventional dial-up modem speeds. The tour is fully supported by national sponsors, with additional local support provided by cable affiliates Cablevision, Cox, Comcast, Intermedia, Marcus, Shaw, Rogers and TCI.

"Cisco technology helped build the Internet and has provided reliable, high-speed Internet connections to businesses for years," said Robba Benjamin, vice president and general manager of Cisco's Consumer Line of Business. "Now we are applying our expertise to bring consumers the same power and speed. The Cable Internet Revolution Expo gives Cisco and its partners a chance to share the awesome power of the high-speed Internet experience."

The Cable Internet Revolution Expo schedule for the remaining four cities is as follows:

  • October 16-18 Mall of Louisiana, Baton Rouge, Louisiana
  • October 23-25 Willow Grove Mall, Willow Grove, Pennsylvania
  • October 30 - November 1 Marksville Shopping Center, Markham, Ontario
  • November 6 -8 Livingston Mall, Livingston, New Jersey
