Customers will enjoy faster throughput, higher availability thanks to Verio's continued investments in advanced equipment and high-speed clear lines

SAN JOSE, Calif. and ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - September 2, 1998 - Verio Inc., a leading provider of Internet connectivity, Web hosting and enhanced services to small and mid-sized businesses, and Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that Verio is installing Cisco 12000 series Gigabit Switch Routers (GSRs) on its network backbone to enhance network performance. "These are the first routers available that allow us to move data at speeds higher than 155 Mbps," said Chris DeMarche, Verio chief technical officer. "Our customers will enjoy faster throughput, higher availability and continued superior service quality. This combination of powerful, new routers and our continued migration to new high-speed clear lines should strengthen the performance of our network."

Installation of Cisco's most advanced routers, the 12000 series, will enable Verio to substantially increase the data capacity of its Tier I backbone as customer demand for reliable high-speed data transmission continues to escalate. The 12000 GSRs support backbone links at OC-3 (155 Mbps) and are scalable to OC-48c (2.4 Gbps), helping to ensure that Verio is prepared to handle accelerating future growth and emerging technologies. Verio has installed Cisco 12000 routers in Palo Alto, Calif., Seattle and Washington, D.C. Future installations are planned in Seattle, Dallas, Philadelphia and Chicago.

DeMarche said the Cisco 12000 routers represent next-generation architecture for the Internet. "This investment will help keep Verio at the forefront as one of the nation's leading Internet providers," said DeMarche. "And it will keep our customers moving full speed ahead on the Internet."

"Verio's deployment of the 12000 GSR enables it to deliver new world services that are customer- focused and Web-enabled," said Graeme Fraser, Vice President and General Manager of Cisco's Optical Internetworking Business Unit. "Cisco's advanced IP solutions provide Verio with a truly robust IP backbone network that will enable them to deliver these new services ahead of its competition."

The Cisco 12000 is a carrier-class gigabit switch router that is designed to deliver Internet routing and switching at gigabit speeds. The Cisco 12000 GSR provides scalable IP forwarding and services performance in a single integrated platform, enabling high-speed IP backbones to scale to OC-12 (622 Mbps) and OC-48 (2.4 Gbps). Future GSR technology will support OC-192 (9.6 Gbps). With extensive redundancy and carrier-compliant equipment standards, the Cisco 12000 series is expressly designed to provide the high availability required by high-speed service provider backbones.
