LONDON, UK -- September 16th, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, today announced it is supplying Dutch service provider SURFnet with five Cisco 12000 routers to enhance its network. SURFnet is upgrading to the high capacity Cisco 12012 routers to cope with its rapidly growing traffic demands.
SURFnet is the national computer network for education and research in the Netherlands. Local networks of member institutions are connected to each other, to the Internet and to other national and international networks via SURFnet. Today, there are over 250 members connected to SURFnet.
The SURFnet network is migrating towards a nationwide 622Mbit/s Packet-over-SDH core backbone network. This will be ready at the end of 1998, with Points of Presence (PoPs), mostly located at universities, connected at 155Mbit/s to the core. These nodes are connected via resilient SDH connections from KPN Telecom, forming the backbone of the SURFnet network.
Due to the rapidly increasing amount of traffic crossing the net, SURFnet has decided to enhance the present backbone consisting of Cisco's 7500 routers by deploying Cisco's 12000 routers, in order to guarantee a future-safe service to its education and research members. The current 7500 routers are being moved to the edges of the network for improved customer connections.
"We predicted, with the growing demand being placed on our network, that we would be facing congestion problems within the next year," explains Erik-Jan Bos, network services manager at SURFnet. "The Cisco 12000s will enable us to grow our backbone to multiple times STM-4 and beyond."
Cisco's 12000 routers answer the growing demand from developing technologies for increased bandwidth. This upgrade enables SURFnet to continue to provide the latest and most efficient service to its customers.
