Cisco AS5X00 Family Enables Next-Generation Remote Access Service

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- September 28, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that it is supplying access servers for New York University's NYU DIAL remote access service. NYU DIAL provides modem dialup access to more than 42,000 university users and receives between 14,000 and 15,000 calls per day during both spring and fall semesters.

New York University's Academic Computing Facility is currently using 14 access servers from the Cisco AS5x00 family of universal access servers, including AS5200s, AS5300s and AS5800s, to support its remote access service. The Cisco Dial Access Stacking Architecture (DASA) delivers seamless dial services with a common user interface and management across all AS5x00 platforms, dramatically reducing NYU's operational costs. The university's dialup volume has increased from 780,000 connections in 1993 to 5.5 million connections in 1997. University officials project more than six million connections for 1998.

"We wanted high-availability dial solutions that could perform in high-volumesituations and provide seamless integration with our existing Cisco routerinfrastructure," said Jimmy Kyriannis, Associate Network Manager for theAcademic Computing Facility of New York University. "We have been verysatisfied with Cisco dial access platform performance and reliability."

The Cisco IOS. software implementation of the Kerberos V security protocol in its access servers also enabled the university to expand production deployment of its Kerberos encrypted authentication service. This provides a single network ID for each user as well as a secure, centralized authentication base.

New York University's Academic Computing Facility provides campus-wide network connectivity to the New York University community, including faculty, students and staff. This includes Internet and Internet2 access, local connectivity among campus buildings, centralized computing services, and server resources and remote access to such facilities via dialup connections.
