SAN JOSE, Calif. -- September 16, 1998 -- Eleven leading high-tech companies today announced support for the Administration's encryption proposal. Today's announcement represents a positive step forward for U.S. encryption technology, but is not a total solution. This proposal offers the framework to enable U.S. industry to provide security solutions for our customers. As an industry, we believe this effort reflects the importance of encryption technology in driving the Internet economy and U.S. technology leadership. Industry is committed to working with the Administration on a complete solution.
In July, a coalition of high-tech companies filed proposals with the U.S. Department of Commerce, asking for permission to sell strong encryption products abroad that use operator action technologies. We are pleased to see this technology included in the Administration's announcement. While today's announcement does not constitute government approval on the pending proposals, we look forward to a prompt decision.
