SAN JOSE, Calif. -- September 23, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, announced today that resellers and end-users are embracing Cisco desktop switching solutions now more than ever before, according to recent market share reports. Cisco offers resellers a full line of high-performance desktop switching products that are reliable, secure and affordable, including the award-winning Catalyst 2900 Series XL Fast Ethernet and the Catalyst 1900 and 2820 Ethernet switch product lines. Cisco Catalyst 1900 and 2820 series switches, available in Standard and Enterprise editions, provide industry-leading performance and Cisco end-to-end network integration at the lowest per-port cost in the industry.

"For my customers looking to migrate from a legacy network or build a reliable and affordable high-performance intranet, only Cisco offers the complete solution," said Mark Jamison, regional manager for Enterprise Network Systems, a Redwood City, Calif. -based solutions integrator and reseller. "Due to their performance, simple management, price and integration with Cisco's market leading routers, Cisco Catalyst 2900 XL switches provide customers with scalable, reliable end-to-end solutions."

"We are very pleased with the success resellers are having with our desktop switches," said Larry Birenbaum, vice president and general manager for the Small Internetworks Business Unit of Cisco's Small/Medium Business Line of Business. "Looking forward, we will continue to enhance our industry leading intranet solutions with new features, such as our new Visual Switch Manager software, giving our resellers the products they need to continue meeting and surpassing their customers' requirements."

While market share figures decreased for other switching vendors in the first half of 1998, Cisco's position in both the fixed Ethernet and Fast Ethernet desktop switch markets increased considerably. According to a recent market report issued by the Dell'Oro Group, Cisco is the market leader in the switched Ethernet market segment, in both the number of ports shipped and overall market segment share with 31 percent and 30 percent, respectively. In addition, Cisco has increased its Fast Ethernet market segment share from zero to nearly 20 percent within the first six months of 1998. Furthermore, in a recent VARBusiness report, Cisco received the most votes from surveyed VARs for the "best-selling" products category.
