SAN JOSE, Calif. -- September 15, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced Cisco AccessPath VS3, an enhancement to the AccessPath product family, which offers leading-edge voice over IP (VoIP) and fax over IP services. Designed for service provider and large-scale enterprise applications, Cisco AccessPathVS3 is the industry's first fully integrated dial access system that merges universal VoIP access, industry-leading switching and high-speed backhaul routing capabilities into a single scalable architecture.

The Cisco AccessPath VS3, in conjunction with Cisco IOS. software functionalities, enables quick deployment of toll-quality voice and fax services over data networks, with an unprecedented level of system reliability, availability and scalability. In addition to industry-leading voice quality, the system offers superior availability and scalability to over 1,200 ports. For future customer needs, Cisco AccessPath VS3 was designed to accommodate up to four times the current density, offering a smooth migration to next-generation Cisco AccessPath systems scalable beyond 5,000-port capacity.

"We chose the Cisco AccessPath VS3 to deploy our packet telephony network because the product offers the high quality, reliability and scalability we required," said J. Shelby Bryan, President and CEO of ICG. "The voice quality of the product is excellent and we believe our partnership with Cisco will enable ICG to lead the converging telecom and Internet industries."

"We're a telephone company that requires telco reliability, and we chose the Cisco AccessPath VS3 because it offers superior availability," said Thomas F. Riley, Chief Operating Officer, Chickasaw Telecom. "We also conducted extensive voice quality tests on the equipment we were considering, and the voice quality of Cisco's solution was by far the best; our customers can't tell the difference, and they're extremely happy with the costs savings they've achieved with VoIP."

The Cisco AccessPath VS3 supports a wide range of voice applications, including toll bypass, universally accessible voice- and fax-mail services, aggregation for intracompany phone calling and faxing, phone to phone through PBXs and key systems, real-time fax to fax, computer-phone to PSTN, and more.

Cisco AccessPath VS3 Advanced Dial Architecture

Cisco AccessPath VS3 is an extension of Cisco's AccessPath product family, which provides customers with a smooth transition path from a single-chassis solution to a distributed multichassis architecture. Cisco AccessPath architecture scales dynamically, enabling a host of value-add Cisco IOS software network services including quality of service (QoS).

The Cisco AccessPath VS3 implements Dial Access Stacking Architecture (DASA) to offer a high-performance, scalable and resilient carrier-class packet telephony solution. The Cisco AccessPath VS3 incorporates Cisco's high-density, high-performance Cisco AS5300 platform with voice/fax feature cards, the high-performance Cisco 3640 gatekeeper, and Cisco's industry-leading routing and switching products to ensure carrier-class scalability and reliability.

The Cisco AccessPath VS3 scales from 48- to 1,008-port capacity in T1 configurations and 60- to 1,260-port capacity in E1 configurations, easily accommodating growth in network demand as well as geographic reach. Moreover, the Cisco AccessPath-VS3 was designed to preserve customer investments by accommodating up to four times its current density, offering a smooth migration to next-generation Cisco AccessPath systems scalable beyond 5,000-port capacity.

"The Cisco AccessPath system addresses customer needs for scalability, manageability and integration," said Douglas Frosst, Product Line Manager, High-End Remote Access Solutions for Cisco. "The product offers an integrated point-of-presence system to streamline customer deployments, but also offers voice and fax capabilities, a key requirement in leading-edge carrier-class and enterprise applications today."

Availability

Cisco AccessPath-VS3 will be available for volume deliveries in November 1998.
