Cisco 2612 to Aid Nestle Switzerland IS Centralization and EthernetMigration Efforts

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- August 24, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that Nestle Switzerland, the Swiss subsidiary of the Nestle Group - the world's largest food manufacturing company - will deploy the Cisco 2612 modular access router with Token Ring (availability announced today; see "Cisco Expands 2600 Series of Modular Access Routers") to link more than 25 local entities with its Swiss head office.

To link with factories, sales offices and distribution centers nationwide, Nestle Switzerland will deploy approximately 20 Cisco 2612 modular access routers and several 7200 series routers. Nestle Switzerland chose the router because it offers both Ethernet and Token Ring interfaces; Nestle Switzerland currently uses Token Ring but plans to gradually migrate to Ethernet. In addition, Nestle Switzerland is working to centralize its local IS resources to reduce costs and streamline operations.

The Cisco 2600 series was designed as a cost-effective branch office platform with extensive multiservice capabilities and a broad selection of WAN connectivity options. Using a 2612 router in conjunction with the 7200 series routers in its local head office allows Nestle Switzerland to flexibly and cost-effectively service branch offices while linking them to high-end networking equipment at the head office. Two 7200 series routers will operate as a fault-tolerant system, further assuring network uptime.

"We chose the Cisco 2600 and 7200 series because of the products' performance and flexibility and the dependability of Cisco as our local supplier," said Hoai Bac Pham, network and telecom manager, Nestle Switzerland. "Cisco has been chosen as our local networking supplier because our top need is network uptime and reliability; Cisco products have a reputation as the most dependable and highest quality on the market."

Cisco 2612 with Token Ring and Ethernet Ports: Flexibility and Easy Migration to Ethernet

The Cisco 2600 series offers unprecedented price/performance, extending the versatility, integration and power of the Cisco 3600 series to smaller, remote branch offices. The modular Cisco 2600 series provides investment protection by enabling migration to emerging WAN technologies and by supporting data/voice/video integration, dial concentration and secure multiprotocol access - all in a single device. With the release of the Cisco 2612 and 2613, which both support Token Ring, customers such as Nestle Switzerland can retain legacy Token Ring networking applications while gradually upgrading to Ethernet.

"The Cisco 2600 has been selected as our standard local router because it can accommodate our growth and flexibly fits our needs," said Pham. "It offers extensive multiservice capabilities and support for a variety of WAN connectivity options, making it extremely adaptable."

Gary Mattevi, senior director of marketing for the Cisco Multiservice Access Business Unit, said Cisco designed the 2600 series to be the ideal fit in remote office locations such as Nestle Switzerland. "We're seeing more companies whose goal is to provide cost-effective router support locally, with centralized IS networking support. The 2600, with VPN access, data/voice/video traffic and sophisticated network protocols between main and branch offices, is the ideal solution for this model," Mattevi said.
