LONDON, UK -- August 3, 1998 -- Cisco Systems has announced that it is providing the technical infrastructure for MondoNet, a global intranet service for business users recently launched by TMI TeleMedia International, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Telecom Italia, the sixth largest telecom operator in the world. MondoNet is the TMI IP network, which supports the worldwide IP-based services offered to multinational customers, including Internet/intranet services and virtual private network solutions, through dedicated and dial access.

MondoNet allows multinational companies to give customers and business partners controlled access to selected areas of its own internal network. This extranet capability allows the creation of a whole range of relationships that mutually strengthens the company's, customers' and partners' business. Believed to be the world's first integrated global IP network specifically designed to support VPN (Virtual Private Network) services, MondoNet is already available in over 30 cities, throughout the US, Europe, the Pacific Rim and South America.

The Cisco-based infrastructure will be used to provide both dedicated and dial-up access to integrated internetworking and for remote access to corporate intranets. For the future, MondoNet is positioned to grow the number of strategic partnerships with local operators, eventually enabling it to offer the world's largest IP-based VPN service.

MondoNet is specifically aimed at large multi-national companies who require high performance and security within a VPN service. The choice of technology was therefore fundamentally important. "MondoNet is the realization of a vision we have for the future of VPNs," says Andrea Casini Cortesi, TMI Internet Services VP. "Since users have complete confidence in us, we must be able to fully rely on the technology that underpins our service. Cisco technology ensures end-to-end that TMI and our customers can have complete confidence in the MondoNet network."

Neil Stevenson, European Marketing Director for Cisco's Service Provider line of business, comments: "IP networks are all about enabling customers to maintain their competitive advantage. A reliable, secure and efficient VPN is what today's enterprises demand. MondoNet is offering precisely that, and is a good example of the paradigm shift towards IP datacentric network infrastructures that are forming the basis of the New World public service architecture."

Thanks to these and future partnership agreements with local operators, MondoNet is well positioned to be the largest IP-based VPN service worldwide.
