Cisco 1600 Series Surpasses Record Milestone
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- August 5, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. announced today that it has shipped more than 250,000 Cisco 1600 series small office routers; the first Cisco product line to achieve this milestone in under 21 months.
The Cisco 1600 series, announced in October 1996, was designed specifically for small and growing businesses and small branch offices. The Cisco 1600 series delivers flexibility, modularity and investment protection. It surpassed the 100,000 unit mark in November of 1997 just one year after introduction and the 200,000 unit mark in May 1998. Named the best ISDN router of the year in 1997 by PC Magazine, the Cisco 1600 series are the routers of choice among small and growing businesses.
The Cisco 1600 series consists of five models each optimized to meet specific LAN and WAN requirements for small office applications. The Cisco 1600 series is the leading component in the Cisco Networked Office Stack, a suite of stackable desktop products, designed to meet the networked business requirements of small and growing companies.
"Inexpensive, ISDN and serial dial-up routers appear to be the solution of choice for small businesses and small branch offices to connect to the outside world," said Tam Dell'Oro, principal analyst at the Dell'Oro Group. "This market segment is the strongest growth segment in the router market, growing 70 percent in 1997. Having captured 28 percent of this segment, Cisco is roughly twice the size of its closest competitor, reflecting Cisco's success in serving the small business market."
Howard Charney, senior vice president of Small/Medium Business at Cisco said, "We thank all of our customers for selecting and using Cisco products to connect people, computing devices and computer networks together all over the world. The quarter million unit milestone for the Cisco 1600 series reminds us of how important our customers are."
