Extends Investment Protection to Token Ring and Mixed-LAN EnvironmentsIn Remote Branch Offices
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- August 24, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced the Cisco 2612 and Cisco 2613 modular access routers - two additions to the cost-effective Cisco 2600 series of routers. The new routers extend the reach of Cisco multiservice solutions into Token Ring and mixed-LAN environments in remote branch offices. The routers' modular design, as with the entire Cisco 2600 series, enables customers to adopt new technologies and accommodate network expansion, protecting customers' technology investment and lowering the overall cost of connecting remote branch offices to corporate networks.
The Cisco 2600 series modular access router family, announced in March of this year, is a key component of Cisco's data/voice/video integration strategy, enabling corporate customers to consolidate data, voice and video traffic to reduce costs, deploy new business applications and improve network efficiency. Combined with voice/fax gateway modules, the Cisco 2600 series can be used to take advantage of new applications, including Internet telephony, call center trunking, and real-time fax relay.
"The Cisco 2600 series router provides us with a cost-effective solution for integrating voice and data on our worldwide IP network," said Sidney Morgan, manager of data communications at Sybase, Inc. "Best of all, we won't be faced with a 'forklift' upgrade a few months down the road if we need to add a new service or interface. The addition of the Token Ring solutions will allow more companies to benefit from the modularity and performance of the Cisco 2600 series router."
All Cisco 2600 series routers support a variety of modular interfaces that enable applications such as dial services, Internet/intranet access, secure virtual private networks (VPNs), and multiservice data/voice/video integration, offering customers a pay-as-you-go alternative for deploying network services.
Investment Protection and Network Consolidation
The Cisco 2600 series shares modular interfaces with Cisco 1600 and 3600 series products, providing businesses and service providers with a range of modular, interchangeable solutions for use in small, medium-sized and regional branch offices. Components are field upgradable, allowing network managers to easily change interfaces as new services are deployed - without performing a costly replacement of the entire remote branch office solution. The new routers allow customers with Token Ring or mixed-LAN environments to protect current investments in network technology and benefit from the trend toward network consolidation. In industries such as banking, retail, and financial services, the Cisco 2600 series enables businesses to eliminate the need for multiple, parallel networks. By combining Ethernet and Token Ring LAN traffic, voice/fax traffic, and serial traffic from devices such as automated teller machines, point-of-sale terminals, and security systems on a single network infrastructure, businesses can reduce the cost and complexity of connecting multiple remote locations.
Key Features of the Cisco 2612 and 2613 Models
The Cisco 2600 series extends the versatility, integration and power of the popular Cisco 3600 series to smaller, remote branch offices and complements the industry-leading Cisco 2500 series. The Cisco 2612 features Token Ring and Ethernet LAN ports, while the Cisco 2613 has a single Token Ring port. All Cisco 2600 series platforms support two WAN interface card slots, one network module slot, and one advanced integration module (AIM) slot.In addition to voice/fax modules, the Cisco 2600 series routers support integrated DSUs/CSUs and a variety of serial interfaces. New integrated modems and support for ISDN BRI and PRI modules for the Cisco 2600 allow customers to deploy a one-box solution for integrated routing and analog or digital remote access in the branch office. (See separate announcement, "Cisco Announces New Dial Capabilities for 3600 and 2600 Series Routers.") Customers deploying ADSL access can use the new 25-Mbps ATM network module to connect the Cisco 2600 series to ADSL modems such as the Cisco 626 ATM25 ADSL modem.
