Taps Kevin Kennedy to Lead the Service Provider Line of Business


SAN JOSE, Calif. -- August 10, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced the promotion of four executives to the position of senior vice president. The promotions include: Kevin Kennedy, Service Provider Line of Business; Charlie Giancarlo, Global Alliances; Barbara Beck, Human Resources; and Cliff Meltzer, IOS Technology and Engineering Operations.

"Cisco's success over the past several years is due in part to building a world class leadership team that is evaluated on their ability to deliver results, build a quality team, balance planning and reacting and position their organization for the future," said John Chambers, president and CEO of Cisco. "These four leaders have each delivered exceptional results in their respective areas and truly deserve this promotion."

Kevin Kennedy joined Cisco four and one-half years ago and was responsible for leading the development of the company's leased-line access and dial access product lines. In his new role, Kennedy will be responsible for growing business in Cisco's Service Provider Line of Business focusing on providing solutions for Internet service providers, telcos, cable and wireless companies. Kennedy will report to executive vice president Don Listwin. Prior to joining Cisco, Kennedy worked at AT&T Bell Labs for over 16 years, where he was responsible for product definition and development. While at Bell Labs, he contributed to the development of products such as Dataphone II leased line modems, packet switched data PBX's, FDDI-based networking gear, and the Conversant voice response system. Kennedy holds a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, a M.S. degree in mechanical engineering and a Ph.D. from Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Charlie Giancarlo joined Cisco in 1994 as part of the Kalpana acquisition. As vice president of Business Development, Giancarlo helped develop and refine the acquisition and partnering strategy that has helped make Cisco successful today. As vice president of Global Alliances, he has overcome many internal and external challenges while creating a number of effective partnerships with key business and technology leaders as well as major sales partners, integrators and service providers. Giancarlo holds a BSEE from Brown University, an MSEE from the University of California at Berkeley, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Barbara Beck joined Cisco nine years ago when the company had 44 employees. In her roles as manager, director and vice president of HR, she has overseen Cisco's growth to more than 14,500 employees. During her tenure, Beck has introduced numerous world class programs in the areas of recruitment, retention, leadership and employee development, and productivity tools. With more than 200 worldwide offices, Barbara's team has scaled to meet Cisco's increasing global needs and will continue to play a key role in ensuring that Cisco attract, retain and develop the top 10-15% of the industry. Moving forward, Barbara will continue to focus on developing superior leadership throughout the company, on leading Cisco's efforts to invest in the community and on Cisco's most valuable assets, its employees. Beck holds a B.A. degree in natural science and a California teaching credential from San Jose State University.

Cliff Meltzer has been at Cisco for five and one-half years and has held a variety of key positions. As director of Engineering and then vice president and general manager of the Interworks Business Unit, Meltzer developed the RTP Engineering team and extended Cisco's portfolio of products for the IBM market, where Cisco currently has 80+% marketshare. In his current role as vice president of IOS Technology and Engineering Operations, Meltzer is overseeing the development and marketing of future Cisco IOS. software releases, the key differentiator in the company's end-to-end strategy. One of the keys to Meltzer's success is his ability to recruit and retain the best engineering talent in the industry. He is also driving Cisco's implementation of Internet Service Units (ISUs) in the areas of video, security and IP. This effort is instrumental in helping Cisco achieve end-to-end Internet services leadership as the company moves into an integrated data, voice and video environment. Meltzer holds a BA in Mathematics, and a MS in Computer Science from the University of Rochester.
