SAN JOSE, Calif. -- July 22, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that The New York Public Library, one of the world's great libraries, has selected Cisco as their strategic supplier of network infrastructure equipment. The enhanced Cisco-equipped network will allow new bandwidth-intensive applications to be accessible throughout the library and create a "virtual single site."

The New York Public Library consists of four major research centers and 85 branches. It is the only facility of its kind, with both world-renowned research collections and circulating collections that are free and open to the general public.

The network and the newly established "virtual single site" are used for public access to the library's catalogues, online electronic resources, digitized collections, as well as the Internet. Performance and scalability of the network are critical because more than 2.5 million electronic sessions are initiated annually with a projected growth rate of over 60 percent per year.

"In the information age, the library requires a sophisticated, high-bandwidth network to ensure free and public access to the wealth of human thought and creativity now available through electronic transmission," said David Sturm, director of information technology and chief information officer of The New York Public Library. "Cisco has helped us build one of the most powerful electronic information systems of any library."

The network is built with Cisco Catalyst. LAN switches, Cisco LightStream.1010 ATM switches, Cisco 7500 series routers, Cisco 2500 routers and Cisco network management tools.

"The New York Public Library is considered a national treasure, and we've been involved with the planning and design of its vision from the beginning," said Bill Conlon, vice president of worldwide market development and public sector executive sponsor for Cisco Systems. "It is rewarding to play an important role in the delivery of technology enabling the library to be a leader in providing anywhere, anytime access to precious public resources and information."
