ATLANTA, GA -- June 9, 1998 -- RELTEC Access Systems and Cisco Systems, Inc. are working together to provide integrated, Digital Loop Carrier (DLC) DSL solutions for commercial deployment beginning in 2Q98.

This week at SUPERCOMM '98, the two companies are showcasing an integrated ADSL solution over RELTEC's industry-leading DISC*S. Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier (NGDLC) system that uses the Cisco 6100 series Advanced DSL Access Multiplexer. Demonstrations of this solution will be ongoing at RELTEC Booth No. 8639 throughout the week.

DLC solutions are an important aspect of DSL service deployment as many service provider customers, particularly in suburban areas, receive telephone services through connections from DLC systems rather than from central offices.

"A majority of the DSL subscriber base sits behind DLCs. The combination of Cisco's DSL access products with RELTEC's NGDLC results in a significant increase in addressable markets for service providers," said Kent Savage, Director of DSL Operations for Cisco Systems.

The Cisco 6100 series that RELTEC is integrating into their NGDLC system has been temperature-hardened for outside plant deployments. The integrated product enables service providers to connect individual DSL subscriber lines to their backbone networks for high-bandwidth Internet and data access. DSL subscribers can connect to the DLC solution with Cisco DSL modems and routers.

"RELTEC's relationship with Cisco has allowed the realization and first commercial deployment of a DSL solution integrated into an NGDLC platform, complete with powering, thermal testing, EMI studies, wiring, protection and outside plant cabinetry," said Walt Prusak, vice president of Bedford, Texas-based Access Systems. "RELTEC's skills in access systems integration and network components, combined with Cisco's expertise in data management and transmission, lead to a package that not only is early to market, but second-to-none in functionality. Yet another "first" for the DISC*S platform."

RELTEC's DISC*S NGDLC Platform has continuously evolved since its introduction in 1988, with over six million lines in service today. The platform has economic configurations from 192 lines to 2,016 lines, and service provisioning capabilities from Advanced Copper Solutions(SM) to Deep Fiber Solutions(SM).
