SAN JOSE, Calif. -- June 25, 1998 -- Global One, the international joint venture of Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom and Sprint, has selected Cisco servers - including the CiscoSecure Global Roaming Server (GRS), CiscoSecure Access Control Server (ACS), and the Cisco AS5200 and AS5300 Universal Access Server products - to provide secure mobile intranet and Internet access.

These platforms enable Global One to deliver globally unique dial-in service offerings, including one of the first worldwide roaming virtual private network (VPN) services. The Global One Remote Dial Access Service, which the company launched in January, is available initially in 25 countries in Europe, Asia Pacific and the Americas and is rapidly rolling out to more than 50 countries by the end of the year. The service enables multinational corporate customers to provide secure, cost-effective intranet access for their mobile and telecommuting employees and remote branch offices.

CiscoSecure GRS Opens New Business Opportunities

"As a result of Cisco's GRS, ACS and universal access server technologies, Global One corporate customers have secure, cost-effective access by roaming employees to vital business information," said Hartmut Penz, vice president for IP Services at Global One.

With CiscoSecure GRS deployed, traveling employees can dial a local number and enjoy improved network performance when accessing the Internet, their e-mail and their corporate intranets, while eliminating costly long-distance charges. CiscoSecure GRS directs requests to the Global One worldwide network, and CiscoSecure ACS provides authorization and authentication for calls as they travel via a secure "tunnel" to the customer's corporate intranet. Because the CiscoSecure GRS can interoperate with any TACACS+ or RADIUS authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) server, corporations can maintain their existing AAA infrastructures and databases.

CiscoSecure ACS Maintains High Security

CiscoSecure ACS enables Global One to offer outsourcing services to its business customers, while providing the high level of reliability and security that large corporate customers need to protect their networks and information assets. Corporate customers realize significant cost savings using Global One's Global Intranet network service because they don't incur high long-distance charges or maintain expensive toll-free numbers. Furthermore, employees have improved access to corporate resources because they can dial in from more locations around the world.

Providing Universal Access to ISDN Services

The Cisco AS5200 and AS5300 universal access servers provide dial access for asynchronous and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) calls via a single trunk line. Universal access servers provide channel service unit (CSU), terminal server, managed modem and routing functionality in a single platform, which simplifies administration, troubleshooting and management. The Cisco AS5200 and AS5300 enable large enterprises to terminate ISDN and analog modem calls up to 56 Kbps on the same interface. In addition, the Cisco AS5300 provides up to 120 connections in a single chassis and delivers near-line-speed performance for up to 120 concurrent analog modem calls and ISDN B channels over a single dial-in telephone number.

Extending an End-to-End Solution

Cisco class of service and quality of service features enable Global One to offer differentiated levels of service based upon customer requirements. In addition to the CiscoSecure GRS, CiscoSecure ACS and universal access server platforms, Global One employs Cisco 7500 series routers as backbone routers and Cisco 4700 routers at the many access points. Cisco IOS. software provides a flexible, integrated end-to-end Cisco solution, enabling Global One to reduce operating costs and decrease time to market for new services. It also provides customers with easier, faster and more reliable dial-in connections. Global One plans to deploy additional IP-based voice, fax and videoconferencing services over its network.
