Cisco Systems and Magellan Network Systems Team On End-To- End Voice Over IP Solution

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- June 15, 1998 -- Magellan Network Systems, Inc. (Magellan) today announced Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) integration between Cisco Systems' AS5300 Universal Access Servers and Magellan's flagship M-Series telecommunications platforms. The solution provides voice over data networks together with full telco billing and administration.

With the Cisco/Magellan integration:

  • Datacom service providers can resell telecommunications services over their existing data network (Intranet) and through all PSTN providers.
  • Large enterprises may reduce telephony costs by using their data networks for voice services.
  • Telecom service providers can add VoIP capabilities and reduce costs.

According to Mark Wagner, VP of Sales for Magellan, "Voice over IP has generally been provided as a very basic service with billing limited toaccess charges." Wagner adds that, "By combining Cisco's VoIP equipment and Magellan's M-Series telecommunication platforms, service providers and larger enterprises can now add a full range of enhanced services together with billing and system management, thereby offering a complete telecom solution."

Magellan's telecom capabilities include caller validation, least cost routing, and protocols for virtually any PSTN. Magellan's enhanced servicesinclude real time call rating, long distance resale, prepaid phone cards, recharge capabilities, voicemail, operator services, and one numberfollow-me.

Phone Card System Available for Demonstrations

To demonstrate the quality of the Cisco/Magellan integrated solution, a prepaid phone card service has been established and was introduced atSupercomm in Atlanta, June 9-11. Holders of theses phone cards call an 800 number for validation and then may call anywhere in thecontinental U.S. over Cisco's data network using VoIP technology.
