SAN JOSE, Calif. -- May 12, 1998 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. today introduced a High-Speed Serial Interface (HSSI) module for the Cisco 3620 and 3640 routers, enabling customers to achieve higher network bandwidth while preserving their investment in the versatile Cisco 3600 series. The Cisco 3600 combines dial access, LAN-to-LAN services and routing with its multiservice integration of voice and data, making it an ideal platform for HSSI applications.
The new HSSI interface serves bandwidth-intensive applications, including corporate intranets, multitenant Internet access and virtual private networks (VPNs). It reduces WAN costs for these applications by allowing users to replace multiple T1 or E1 lines with a single T3 or E3 line, greatly reducing tariffs.
In addition, the interface offers scalability and performance, with fractional DS-3/ES support of speeds from 1.544 Mbps through 52 Mbps that can be upgraded without replacing hardware. The flexible interface supports multiple environments such as DS-3/E3, synchronous optical network (SONET) and synchronous transport signal level one (STS-1) rates (including SMDS and Frame Relay) using an external channel service unit/data service unit (CSU/DSU). A single Cisco 3640 router can support up to three HSSI interfaces, maximizing customer router investments.
"We've designed the HSSI module to help network managers meet the demand for bandwidth-intensive, bursty data services over wide-area networks by efficiently managing and maximizing the capacity of high-speed interfaces on network routers," said Paul Lammerding, product line manager for Cisco's Multiservice Access business unit. "With more than 50,000 units in the field, the Cisco 3600 router series has been one of our most successful product lines."
"With the addition of this HSSI capability, we anticipate that the Cisco 3600 series will become very popular with our larger customers," said Danielle Deibler, manager, IP research and development for DIGEX Incorporated, an Intermedia Communications Company and a leading national Internet carrier serving business customers. "Using the product, we've been able to eliminate multiple T1 lines and multiplexer equipment and have upgraded to a more cost-effective T3 line. Our customers are receiving multiple integrated services benefits, including secure fax/data services, in addition to the advantages of a higher-speed interface for less cost."
Cisco IOS. software provides HSSI interface compatibility with a wide range of protocols, including Frame Relay, and network managers can manage the HSSI interface with all Cisco router management tools.
