SAN JOSE, Calif. - May 26, 1998 - Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced the Cisco 6400 series Universal Access Concentrator. The Cisco 6400 series allows service providers to break through the DSL service profitability barrier by enabling the deployment of new differentiated, value-added DSL services at a mass-market level, reducing the cost of provisioning.

The Cisco 6400 series accomplishes this breakthrough by offering service providers the flexibility to deploy end-to-end DSL services, terminate up to 8,000 PPP sessions, reduce by at least 10 times the number of Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVCs) via a tunneling architecture, and provide a direct interface to both local and cached content. In addition to central-office deployment by service providers, the Cisco 6400 series can be deployed as an ISP or enterprise gateway to terminate and aggregate virtual private network (VPN) traffic.

The Cisco 6400 series is an integral part of Cisco's service-centric DSL architecture, combining the richness of Cisco IOS. routing and ATM switching capabilities in a modular, scalable, redundant form factor that has been designed for central office compliance worldwide.

The Cisco 6400 series can aggregate traffic generated by multiple Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs), including the Cisco 6100 and 6200 Series, as well as other third-party DSLAMs. It provides IP and ATM traffic shaping and traffic management, and enables service providers to offer switched network services, leveraging the network for multiple service types and reducing costs.

The modular design of the Cisco 6400 series allows service providers to select the number of PPP sessions to terminate in a single chassis, the number of subtending DSLAMs to aggregate, and the level of redundancy required for each system component. The Cisco 6400 series supports OC3 and STM-1 interfaces. DS1 and DS3 interfaces are planned for a future release.

Pricing and Availability

The Cisco 6400 series Universal Access Concentrator is available in October1998. List pricing for the Cisco 6400 series starts at $42,000.
