SANTA CLARA, California -- April 6, 1998 -- Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) and Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced a set of joint efforts to provide network-connectivity solutions for mainframe computers.

These joint efforts combine HDS' expertise and product leadership in mainframe systems with Cisco's industry-leading solutions for connecting legacy networks based on the System Network Architecture (SNA) protocol with today's modern networks based on the Internet Protocol (IP).

HDS and Cisco will coordinate support for joint customers, undertake joint marketing and sales efforts, and collaborate on future enterprise server connectivity solutions. HDS is also planning to enter into a resale agreement covering such products as the Cisco 7200 and 7500 router families, the Channel Interface Processor (CIP) and Channel Port Adapter (CPA) cards, and other products associated with Cisco's solution set for mainframe connectivity.

"Customers who have large investments in mainframe-based applications and data are seeking solutions for leveraging those investments in the new Internet economy," said Steve West, president and CEO of HDS. "Cisco's highly cost-effective mainframe connectivity solutions will give our customers a significant advantage in their business operations."

"Cisco's association with Hitachi furthers our ability to help customers gain the productivity and cost advantages that come from combining their growing IP networks with their legacy SNA networks," said Selby Wellman, senior vice president and general manager of Cisco's Interworks Business Unit. "Customers will receive a total solution, as well as better support and service."
