SAN JOSE, Calif. -- April 29, 1998 -- Cisco Systems Inc. today announced it has opened a government-affairs office in Washington, D.C., and named a veteran lobbyist and chief of staff for several members of Congress to head it.

Michael D. Timmeny, 46, joins Cisco as its Washington, D.C. representative after 21 years on Capitol Hill and a term with a major high-technology trade association. Timmeny most recently was Vice President of Domestic Affairs for the 3,000-member American Electronics Association (AEA), where he led the AEA's effort for securities litigation uniform standards legislation as part of the Uniform Standards Coalition.

Before moving to the AEA in mid-1996, Timmeny was chief of staff to Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.), who represents a large portion of Silicon Valley. Previously, he was chief of staff to Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Rep. Ted Weiss (D-NY), Rep. Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II (D-Mass.). He also has served as a legislative assistant and district director for congressional offices. He is a graduate of Harpur College at Binghamton (NY) University.

"With networking technology so important to our nation's business, education and export sectors, we believe it is vital to foster a positive dialogue between industry and government," said John Chambers, president and CEO of Cisco Systems. "Opening an office on Capitol Hill continues our efforts to build bridges between Silicon Valley and Washington. We want to see a two-way process of industry educating government about technology issues, and government educating industry on how to be a good partner."

Timmeny's efforts will focus on four areas: education; securities litigation reform; telecommunications policy; and networked commerce. He joins a government affairs team led by Dan Scheinman, Vice President of Legal and Government Affairs, and Laura Ipsen, Senior Manager of Government Affairs, at Cisco's corporate headquarters in San Jose.

The Cisco office is located close to the Capitol at 601 Pennsylvania Ave.

"We are very pleased to have a person of the experience and skill of Michael to lead our efforts in Washington," Ipsen said. "His knowledge of the high-technology industry as well as long experience on Capitol Hill is a unique combination."
