TAIPEI, Taiwan -- March 4, 1998 -- Cisco Systems Inc. today formally opened its Networked Multimedia Lab (NML) in Taiwan. The lab will help Taiwanese information-technology companies develop and certify products that support networked-multimedia applications.
The opening ceremony was jointly hosted by Yiin Chii-ming, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA); Kuo Yun, President of the Institute for Information Industry (III); and Carl Redfield, Senior Vice President for Manufacturing and Worldwide Logistics at Cisco. Directors of governmental agencies, III and domestic IT vendors also attended.
Last year, under the support of the Office of Committee for Information Industrial Development, MOEA, and the High-Tech Project of MOEA, Cisco signed cooperative agreements with III and four major Taiwanese computer companies - Acer, D-Link, Sun Moon Star and Tatung. After that, III and Cisco worked together to implement the NML, which was made a reality in six months. Since then, four additional vendors have joined the project - Tecom, Accton Technology Corp., Formosa Industrial Computing, Inc. and Ikonnet. Cisco will assist III in providing technological developments and interoperability testing for the partners, which, after rigorous standardization and testing, will be certified with the Cisco Systems Multimedia Associate logo, which will promote the international marketing capabilities of domestic vendors.
"The rapid development of the Internet has accelerated the wide implementation of networked applications, and networked-multimedia features have extended telecommunications beyond text and graphics," Redfield said. "Cisco is committed to cooperative efforts, like this one in Taiwan, to promote standards-based networked-multimedia applications. The Networked Multimedia Lab will enable local vendors to develop value-added networking products based on standardized international networking protocols."
Yiin Chii-ming, Vice Minister of MOEA said, "In the recent financial crisis in Asia, we have demonstrated a high level of adaptability and competitive advantages of our industries. Cisco's collaboration on the Networked Multimedia Lab with Taiwan's industries will boost the technological capabilities of domestic vendors and encourage foreign investment in Taiwan. And the success of Cisco's worldwide business model is also a good example for Taiwan's industries in consolidating their competitive advantages."
Kuo Yun, President of III said, "Since the signing of the cooperative agreement with Cisco, III and Cisco have been actively coordinating the rapid implementation of the NML to enable Cisco to contribute high-end networking technologies to domestic vendors. Now that the NML is open, it will start developing new networking products for our partners, saving them a considerable amount of R&D and networking costs and paving the way towards the realization of a multimedia network in Taiwan."
