SAN MATEO, Calif. -- February 9, 1998 -- Cisco Systems Inc. has made an equity investment in Persistence Software Inc., and has selected the Persistence PowerTier application server as a strategic technology component for their next generation of network service and network management products. The PowerTier technology will provide performance and scalability for managing complex network services such as those available within Cisco IOSĀ® software.
"Persistence is a strategic business and technology partner, delivering performance and scalability for Cisco customers building Internet applications," stated Charlie Giancarlo, Vice President of Global Alliances for Cisco. "The Persistence PowerTier technology will enable our next-generation network service products to manage complex transactions involving dynamic data with high performance and scalability."
The key behind the Persistence PowerTier is a radical new architecture that stores the most frequently used business information in an in-memory cache. Unlike first generation application servers, PowerTier provides split-second response to user requests. Rather than having to pass every user request over the network to the back-end database, the PowerTier server manages frequently accessed data in memory, thereby satisfying the majority of user information requests at in-memory speeds.
"Building an efficient information network requires smart caching," stated Ed Kozel, Chief Technical Officer of Cisco. "Cisco is pleased to be working with Persistence to include PowerTier application-level caching to optimize use of network bandwith. We view this as one of the essential capabilities of Cisco's core architecture for network services."
In addition to accelerating the performance of the back-end database, the in-memory caching capabilities of the Persistence PowerTier greatly reduce network traffic between the application server and the relational database. This optimizes the use of precious network bandwidth.
"The first generation of application servers were great for supporting simple browser clients but lousy at delivering real business information," said Christopher Keene, President and CEO of Persistence. "With the Persistence PowerTier, you run your business state closer to the users who need it, dramatically improving response times while reducing network traffic. For Cisco customers, the PowerTier redefines the economics for implementing complex Internet architectures."
