SAN JOSE and PALO ALTO, Calif., -- December 10, 1997 -- Cisco Systems, Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Company today introduced the Secure Web Transaction Solution (SWTS), which is designed to increase online business security. HP and Cisco's SWTS is a combination of Internet applications, a strong firewall for network protocols and a high-performance network infrastructure. It helps customers to conduct critical business processes, such as electronic commerce (e-commerce), financial services and supply-chain management, securely over the Internet while impeding intruders from gaining access to restricted data. Utilizing the Internet for electronic business can help companies streamline business processes; reduce the cost of manufacturing, distribution and support; and increase overall competitiveness by cutting cycle times and increasing value and services to customers.

"Securing the enterprise infrastructure is a primary challenge for our customers as they move toward a Web-enabled networked commerce model," said Rick Belluzzo, HP executive vice president and general manager of the Computer Organization. "Together, HP and Cisco help companies deploy business-critical applications on the Internet by delivering a new model for networked computing."

"E-commerce and online business solutions are the future for how all enterprises will interact with their customers, suppliers, employees and partners," said Charlie Giancarlo, senior vice president of Global Alliances for Cisco Systems. "With our SWTS' high-performance, secure network environment, our customers can quickly deploy e-business solutions while maintaining data security. "

As Cisco's Global Authorized Support provider, HP's services enable customers to realize the full benefits of the SWTS solution, ensuring that business needs match the technology infrastructure. Worldwide SWTS services feature upfront planning and design, implementation, and ongoing support and maintenance.

Addressing Critical IT Requirements for E-business

SWTS offers a highly secure, highly available, high-performance architecture that enables companies to move mission-critical, transaction-oriented business applications to the Internet. It is composed of the following:

  • HP VirtualVault, which provides a secure run-time environment for Web-enabled applications and databases, reducing the risk that a security flaw in Web-server software or Web front-end applications will compromise the internal systems to which they provide access;
  • The Cisco PIX Firewall, which protects the internal network from the outside world, restricting traffic to authorized protocols and services; and

System Management from a Single Console

The SWTS solution can be managed from a central HP OpenView console. That console monitors the status of each component and alerts administrators of important events, including normal, error and critical events - which then can be acted upon automatically or manually.

The OpenView console can be distributed or centrally located and may be viewed at the console or remotely from a Web browser so administrators always can be in touch with the status of their servers. The OpenView console also manages all other devices and systems on a customer's network, providing a complete enterprise-management perspective and making SWTS installations part of an entire enterprise service-management solution.
