SAN JOSE, Calif. - October 20, 1997 - Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced the dual EthernetCisco 1605-R router with the Cisco IOS Firewall feature set, targeted toward small tomedium-sized businesses and remote offices that require secure intranet connections and securecommunications over the Internet.
As integral components of the evolving Cisco Networked Office Solutions for small andmedium-sized businesses, today's additions will enable customers to benefit from Cisco's provenrouting and firewall technologies in a single, unified, cost-effective solution.
"The Cisco 1605-R router is an ideal component of our family of end-to-end managed Internetsolutions. Although it will be deployed in potentially many solutions, the 1605-R is perfectlysuited for our Small Office product," said Don Hutchison, senior vice president and generalmanager of @Work, the business division of the @Home Network. "It offers @Work theflexibility, reliability and value we demand for our mission critical Internet services."
Cisco 1600 Series Solution Flexibility
The Cisco 1600 series routers connect small offices with Ethernet LANs to wide-area networks(WANs) through Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), asynchronous serial and synchronousserial connections. The latest addition to the Cisco 1600 series, the dual Ethernet Cisco1605-R, provides two Ethernet interfaces and one WAN interface card slot. With two Ethernetinterfaces, internal local-area networks (LANs) can be separated and secured from any externalexposure to the Internet.
In addition to the new Cisco 1605-R router, Cisco added two new WAN interface cards: an ISDNleased-line WAN interface card for the Cisco 1603 and 1604 routers, allowing users to connecttheir networks to a dialup ISDN line and an ISDN leased line; and a WAN interface card forCisco 1600 and 3600 series routers that integrates a 56/64-kbps, four-wire data serviceunit/channel service unit (DSU/CSU).
The Cisco 1605-R is an important addition to the Cisco Networked Office Solution for smalloffices, a set of solutions that include the Cisco IOS Firewall feature set, the Cisco 1500series Micro Hubs, the Cisco Micro Webserver and Cisco ConfigMaker.
Integrated Routing and Firewall Capabilities
The Cisco IOS Firewall feature set is a new Cisco IOS software option that offers integratedfirewall capabilities to users of Cisco 1600 and 2500 series routers who are seeking secureInternet connections, access to Web services and protection from external network attacks. TheCisco IOS Firewall feature set extends security functionality already supported in Cisco IOSsoftware, such as VPN tunneling/Layer2 Forwarding, payload encryption, Network AddressTranslation, router authentication and event logging. The Firewall feature set combinesmultiprotocol routing with security in a single platform that supports multiple interfaces anddistinct security policies. It includes the following security features: context-based accesscontrol for secure per-application access to the Internet; Java blocking to prevent theunintentional downloading of malicious Java applets; denial of service detection and preventionto identify and protect the network from suspicious data packets; real-time alerts for attackdetection and application violations and a TCP/UDP transaction log to notify networkadministrators of network bandwidth usage and unauthorized activities.
Family of Firewall Solutions
With the introduction of the Cisco IOS Firewall feature set, Cisco now offers the broadestfamily of firewall solutions in the industry. Cisco firewall solutions range from thehigh-performance, dedicated PIX Firewall appliance, to the Centri Firewall forWindows-NT, to the new Firewall feature set that combines firewall capabilities with routingfunctionality in a single integrated solution for small and remote offices. Customers can nowselect the most appropriate security solution to meet their specific Internet accessrequirements. Further, Cisco's firewall products can be used together to implement even morepowerful multilayered security architectures.
"In response to the impressive growth in small and medium-sized businesses connecting to andtaking advantage of the Internet, Cisco is adding integrated firewall capabilities to its 1600and 2500 series routers at an affordable price point," said Bruce Laird, director of marketingof the Remote Internetworking Business Unit at Cisco Systems. "Today's additions further theability of small to medium-sized businesses to harness the power of the Internet in a simple, secure and cost-effective manner."
Simple Network Configuration
The Cisco 1605-R is easily configured using Cisco Cisco ConfigMaker, a Windows 95 or NT 4.0 basedsoftware tool designed to configure Cisco 1000, 1600, 2500 and 3600 series routers and 1500series Micro Hubs from a single PC. ConfigMaker graphically guides resellers and networkadministrators with little networking experience through the installation and configuration ofa single router, hub or network of devices.
