- More Information on Cisco AS5200 Universal Access Server
SAN JOSE, Calif.- May 19, 1997 - Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that NokiaTelecommunications has selected the Cisco AS5200 universal access server for the deployment ofnew wireless services.
The Nokia solution will route digital cellular phone calls directly to data networks and theInternet, dramatically reducing connection set-up time and bypassing the costs associated withpassing data through public telephone networks.
Nokia Telecommunications has selected the Cisco AS5200 based on newly announced support of theV.110 rate adaption protocol, which enables Global System for Mobile Telecommunications(GSM/DCS/PCS) mobile users to access corporate intranets and the Internet.
GSM data services use the V.110 rate adaption protocol to connect mobile users to the GSMcircuit through Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) networks. Mobile users now have fulldigital access to the TCP/IP network through the GSM wireless circuit.
Nokia's recently announced Artus product family enables network administrators to provide amanaged Internet access point, as well as Internet access from any GSM phone. The Nokia Artusproduct family consists of the Nokia Artus Access Manager, which provides large-scale datasubscriber management for the mobile operator, and the Nokia Artus Access Router, a new datacommunications server where Nokia will integrate the Cisco AS5200.
The Nokia Artus Access Router solution is configured with E1 Primary Rate Interface (PRI)interfaces that will support the V.110 rate adaption protocol. The Cisco AS5200 will integrateseamlessly into Nokia Mobile Switching Centers and other mobile switches designed to supportGSM connectivity. Nokia will deploy these services to Nokia GSM customers on a global basis.
"With support for the V.110 rate adaption protocol, Nokia can now rapidly deploy advancedservices to its worldwide mobile customers," said Pauli Noronen, Product Manager at NokiaTelecommunications. "With the Nokia Artus Access products, GSM operators can turn mobile datausage into revenue-generating services, just as mobile voice service is today. One of the waysto provide operators with voice-quality mobile services is to take advantage of advanced CiscoIOS(TM) software features ensuring that our dialup pool remains highly resilient and highlyscalable."
The Cisco IOS Software Advantage
Nokia will also support the latest enhancements of Cisco IOS(TM) software for the Cisco AS5200universal access server by incorporating new dial-specific features such as MultichassisMultilink Point-to-Point Protocol (MMP), Cisco Layer 2 Forwarding protocol (L2F) and VirtualPrivate Dial Networks (VPDN).
MMP delivers a software mechanism in which V.110 ISDN B channels can be aggregated acrossmultiple AS5200s, creating a stackgroup environment. Any AS5200 in the stackgroup can thenaggregate any GSM call coming into a single access number via a tunneling between members ofthe stackgroup using L2F. L2F enables advanced VPDN functionality, allowing GSM users frommultiple disparate domains to gain secure access to their corporate home gateways via a publicnetwork or the Internet.
"As dial networks become critical to revenue generation, dialup pools must work in concert toaggregate incoming calls. Cisco IOS features like MMP enable any Cisco access server on thenetwork to aggregate incoming traffic, thus eliminating the possibility of a single point offailure in the network," said Roland Acra, senior director of dial marketing at Cisco Systems.Should a failure occur, network capacity is decreased, but the network will not suffer anysignificant downtime."
