Sunnyvale, CA. April 1, 1997 -- Internet Systems Inc. today announced plansto work with Cisco Systems to deploy Packet OC-3 services that provide nextgeneration bandwidth capability for ISI customers including NetscapeCommunications Corp., Yahoo!, CKS, and Pacific Bell At Hand.

ISI chose Cisco's Packet over SONET (POS) technology to increase Internetperformance and capacity. ISI is the leading service provider for worldwidecontent distribution. ISI leverages a scalable network platform, proprietarycontent management tools and a tiered technical support structure to deliverpremier services to our clients.

"Our relationship with Cisco translates into a competitive advantage for ourcustomers, all of whom rely on the Internet as a distribution medium for theircontent. ISI ensures the best consumer experience while visiting a client's website by engineering our network to deliver consistent performance and havecapacity for peaks," said Jonathan Heiliger, vice president of Operations andEngineering for ISI.

"Tomorrow's Internet will be challenged more thanever by the demanding applications of corporate America. ISI is committed toproviding the most bandwidth efficient solutions that will most effectively servethose applications."

ISI specializes in FTP and HTTP hosting and otherhigh volume Internet distribution services, including RealAudio, e-mailbroadcast, hardware and software solutions and staffing.

"ISI is leadingthe industry in implementing geographically diverse high-volume,high-availability content distribution sites. ISI chose to focus on thecost-effective deployment of regionalized content for information providers, therefore we do not provide Internet access services such as dial-up access, content development or other low-volume Internet services," said Heiliger.

For Internet services, packet-based networking equipment can match theinterface bandwidths supported by Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) or cell-baseddevices while offering bandwidth efficiency gains. By using standard protocolswith efficient overhead structures, the Packet OC-3 Interface Processor maximizesdata throughput and line utilization for expensive, high-bandwidth facilities.

In wide-area networking applications, the Packet OC-3 interface candirectly interface to both carrier and private SONET and SDH facilities.SONET/SDH facilities often provide the most reliable transport since they can beconfigured based on dual counter-rotating ring topologies. In local-areanetworking, Packet OC-3 interfaces can be used to provide direct broadband linksbetween routers in a campus or building, without the need for an intermediateswitch.

"POS is an innovation for enabling bandwidth for all aspects ofcorporate, Internet Service Provider (ISP), exchange points, and NetworkOperation Centers," said Sam Madani, Cisco product manager for the company'sservice provider marketing unit. "The relationship between ISI and Cisco willoffer customers a distinct advantage in distributing their content to theInternet consumer. By leveraging new technology, ISI can continue to push theperformance envelope which ensures their client's websites are accessible at alltimes."

"Ultra-high volume websites like Netscape, Yahoo! and WarnerBros. have specialized Internet needs," explained Jonathan Heiliger. "Theyrequire high-bandwidth networks, sophisticated consultant services and areliable, experienced technical support staff that only ISI can offer."

Few companies can afford to establish the level of performance, security andreliability of ISI's Content Distribution Facilities. The aforementionedcompanies chose to collocate their servers at ISI because the Network Platformoffers higher performance, greater reliability, and a higher degree of securityin addition to the ISI technical team.
