SAN JOSE, Calif. - March 31, 1997 - Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced thatBell Atlantic has chosen the Cisco AS5200 Universal Access Server as its dialplatform in the deployment of more than 64 points of presence (POPs) throughoutthe Bell Atlantic mid-Atlantic service region. Each POP consists of a host ofCisco products tied together with advanced Cisco IOS(TM) software featuresdesigned to deliver high speed connectivity to Bell Atlantic customers.

Bell Atlantic, one of the regional Bell operating companies (RBOCs) in the UnitedStates, has chosen the Cisco AS5200 to aggregate thousands of remote accessconnections coming in from its customers. Callers can now access their Internetservice provider (ISP) through a Bell Atlantic point of presence. Bell Atlantic'snew IP Routing Service (IPRS) is offered as an IP dial-up or IP gateway servicedelivering a low cost access service targeted to meet the needs of ISPs. IPRSconcentrates and collects basic dial (analog), ISDN and dedicated traffic anddelivers it to the ISP over the Bell Atlantic fast packet network. IPRSespecially facilitates the ISDN user with a fast, reliable ISDN connection to theInternet. Bell Atlantic has the greatest installed base of ISDN among the RBOCs.

Bell Atlantic has designed and deployed IPRS primarily based on Cisco products.IPRS delivers a third-party network that ISPs can purchase to deploy theirswitched and dedicated Internet service products and services efficiently, expediently and economically.

ISPs can now quickly launch a presence in any local calling area in the BellAtlantic service region without investing in the capital, real estate andadministrative expenses previously required. The new service is designed so thatthe ISP can scale its participation in any of the Bell Atlantic local access andtransport areas (LATAs). ISPs now can concentrate on selling and managing theirservices, rather than on building access networks to their backbone routernetworks.

Cisco worked diligently to meet the unique and complex Bell Atlantic requirementsand standards. These requirements continue to evolve and Bell Atlantic is verypleased with Cisco's continued effective response. Bell Atlantic believes thiswill help it meet the ISP market requirements and demands as competitioncontinues to expand at a furious pace.

"As businesses move quickly to harness the power of the Internet, customers likeBell Atlantic become crucial in building the infrastructure required in deployingservices across a wide area," said Kevin Kennedy, vice president and generalmanger of the Access Business Unit at Cisco Systems. "Our engineering development coupled with Bell Atlantic's will enable high speed connectivity to a growingbase of customers accessing the Internet."
