EMERYVILLE, CA, December 18, 1996 -- Sybase Inc. today announced that CiscoSystems, Inc., the leading global supplier of internetworking solutions, hasselected SQL Anywhere, the industry-leading mobile database, for use inapplications on UNIX and Windows NT platforms. This contract will allowCisco'sproducts to be bundled with SQL Anywhere. This solution is currentlyscheduled to be generally available in January 1997 and is undergoing betatesting.

Sybase SQL Anywhere is a small footprint, scalable, affordable DBMSsolution forsingle-user desktops, mobile laptop users and networked workgroups.Requiring minimum disk space and providing multi-platform support, SQLAnywhere can be the perfect choice for mass deployment to thousands ofusers inhundreds of sites, a market not suitably addressed by any other DBMStechnology. SQL Anywhere is an ideal embedded database for applications thatprovide connectivity to enterprise internetworks and the Internet for mobile-and home-based users.

"We selected Sybase SQL Anywhere because it is the only full-features,embedded client/server databse that offers a small footprint, low cost andease of integration," said Jeff Turner, director of network managementmarketing at Cisco Systems. "We have found that by enabling users to handlemore complex tasks through embedded intelligence in network managementapplications, operations staffs can achieve cost savings without sacrificingnetwork availability."

With SQL Anywhere, companies can embed robust client/server databasetechnology into their applications using features normally found in highercost enterprise DBMSs such as: referential integrity, stored procedures, triggers, self-tuning query optimizer, low-level locking and full onlineback-up and recovery.

"SQL Anywhere's small footprint and ease of use has already made it theleader in the mobile database market," said Terry Stepien, vice presidentof database marketing at Sybase Inc. "Now that SQL Anywhere is available onthe UNIX platform we can address the entire range of embedded systems."
